Uber newb questions regarding the PC

Whats going on guys? I have been lurking on the forums for a little while now and what a great detailing resource it is! I've achieved the best results I can by hand so I'm getting a PC for my birthday, which is coming up in a few days. I just had a few newb questions...

-Is the difference between the 7424 and the 7336 is that the 7336 already comes with a backing plate? Also, [this is pretty bad] what is the backing plate exactly?

-For pads, I know that I'll need an Orange pad (for heavier polishing?) and then I think a white pads for less abrasive polishes like AIO..? Does anyone use a finishing pad (black i think)? I thought I'd would finish the job with a MF.

-From whom should I get pads from? Any reconmended brands: Meg's, Sonus, etc...

Thanks a lot for checking out the thread! I can't wait to use the PC for the first time.

I believe the 7336 comes with a 6" counterweight and the 7424 with a 5"..or vice versa, not much of a difference really; I'd get the 7336 sicne its cheaper and is still the same thing.

The pad colors will depend on what you get. I got the propel pads from excel detail and my green pad is the more abrasive, blue in the middle, and black for applying a lsp. For the final buff you could get a MF bonnet to shine everything up, but removing the lsp by hand shouldn't be hard since the PC lets you apply the wax thin.

Hey there Ben,

Truzoom pretty much nailed it on the head. The backing plate (either flexible or rigid) attaches to the PC...while pads are attached to the backing plate (generally by a velcro-type system).

Pads colors and their corresponding "cut" greatly differ --> depends on the manufacturer/reseller. I would check out the following thread as it helps me when I have to compare pads.

Pad Info

Besides brand, you also need to consider the shape of the pad --> flat or variable contact (VC). Some manufacturers only have one type (Ex: Meguiar's only has flat pads). I have tried both and I like flat for polishing/surface prep and VC for LSP applications. Of course this is just a personal preference...One of my buddies will only use flat pads while another buddy swears by VC :nixweiss

Anyways good luck,
