Has anybody here used the yellow bug and tar sponge they sell at CMA? I got one last week but man it feels rough to the touch! Says it will not scratch your paint or clearcoat but I don't know...I am afraid to use it!!! :scared
My favorite way of removing bugs and all their nasty little myriad splatted-on parts is with a slice of that bug block and my regular carwash solution.
I first ordered this thing cold several years ago and when it came and I first handled it I thought: no way am I going to touch my paint with this scratchmonger. I let it sit in my kit for weeks. But the insect parts that were more or less embedded in the joins on my front bumper were driving me nuts so finally I decided to test it. And it worked -- it removed every bit of the embedded stuff and left no scratches at all. Since then I've used it not only on my front bumper but also on the front emblem, the grill, my wing mirrors, the front edges of my hood and roof -- and in two years it's never left a scratch on any of those surfaces.
The thing is also great on glass -- leaves the surface completely residue free, no need for additional glass cleaning with a dedicated product after the wash. Plus it removes the black dead-rubber residue from window seals/gaskets beautifully and rinses clean afterwards.
When I get a new block I cut it into "slices" with a bread knife as the smaller pieces are easier to manipulate (you can squeeze them to fit into tight spots). When I wash the car, I squeeze a wash pad of carwash solution across the front bumper and scrub with a slice of bug sponge, making sure to get into the joins. Rinse. I do the same to the wing mirrors and exterior glass, and other areas as needed. I haven't tried it for tar or sap and so cannot comment on effectiveness in those cases but for bugs I wouldn't think of using anything but.

Thanks for the product review!! Now I feel better about using this sponge. I had not thought about cutting it - I was surprised at how big it is!!!
I'll be using it this weekend as I'll be doing one of those long Labor Day weekend drives and will have lots of "bug confetti" to clean off of the grill!
