Turning Light Switch off/on without getting out of bed...

I fall asleep reading a lot and usually wake up in the middle of the night because my light is still on so I have been trying to think of a way in which I can turn my light switch off (across the room) without getting out of bed. Has anyone ever rigged up a string or something else that will allow you to both turn the light switch on and off? I think it would be relatively easy to do one but not both.

Any Ideas?

You can get remote switches (no wires). The only problem is that you can never find the remote when you need it becasue it's dark (why else would you need to turn the light on?). My ceiling fan has a remote + a little holder that goes where the light switch is. It's fine if you remember to put the remote back in the holder. Hell finding it if you don't.

The best and easiest way is to use the X-10 Power modules, amazing simplicity and reliability and inexpensive. They operate through your home's electrical wire system, so you dont need any wiring or the unreliability of wireless RF units. I think some of the Radio Shack stores still sells the X-10 modules. I have my system rigged up to be even controlled by my cellphone to turn on lights, heat and water my lawn, alarm systems even listen in to the house when I am out. Its been on the market for over 30 years, so its proven, best investment I ever made and the uses grow with the use of your imagination !

You need this plug in controller that serves as both dimmer and on/off remote or you can get a wireless one. This inexpensive module can control and dim up to 8 lights/appliances. They used to have a timer controlled module too so you just set it to turn on or off at a specific time, but I can't seem to locate it now.

and you need this module(s) for your lights/lamps to be plugged into, thats it !

Just buy a timer for a lamp. Then you can set it before bed and not even have to worry about having to clap or find a remote. My parents have one they use when going on vacation to turn a lamp on and off to give the appearance of them being home.
