This past weekend I detailed my fathers 97 Toyota 4Runner SR5. I did it with the intention of trying a few new products... and was hoping the vehicle would look good afterwards. This was sort of a test. Up until now I have been using Zaino Sealer System on all my cars. I wanted to try a Carnuba wax. I was pleasantly surprised with the results. My father was thrilled....
This was a quick detail (as far as I am concerned; I'm slow, what, what would take most people an hour takes me 3) so I didn't spend a whole lot of time taping off anything, or even going nuts on all the panels.
Total of 5 hours:
Wash with Dawn Dish Soap
Zaino Clay bar w/ Megs quick detail
Wash with Megs Gold Class and Wool Mit
4 Star LLC on wool pad
4 Star SMR on polishing pad
Red Moose Machine Glaze using final finsh pad
Collnite 845 by hand
Megs Final Inspection (quick detail)
CD2 Engine Detailer on running boards
Stoner Tire Shine
Overall I found the detail to be much quicker and alot easier than anything else I have used. I clay bared the car real quick then jumped right into the LLC using wool on my rotary after quickly washing the car. The only product I didn't like was the LLC. Maybe it was user error, which it frequent is, but I found it to be very hard to work with, it hardened on the paint rapidly, and smeared and left streaks. The SMR on the other hand was amazing. Extremely easy to work with, rapidly removed swirls and even some pretty deep scratches, and it left the paint like glass. The LLC didn't have much of a use next to the SMR remarkably. Then I laid a coat of RMG on. That is where the magic is at! I am buying another 5 bottles of the stuff. Its truly amazing. I might even invest in the whole system. It left the paint like a soaking wet mirror, it was incredibly easy to use, and I feel like it may have covered up some of the mistakes I might have made. Finally I topped it all off with Collnite 845 by hand. Once again really easy to use, although I found out quickly less is better than more. About 6 coin size circles on an applicator cound do a whole truck. I also really liked how it actually resembled wax, not like the watery stuff I am used to using. And since it rained the following day, I got to see how well the water beads up on the paint. Finally I topped it off with Megs Final finish, which brough up the gloss and enhanced the wetness.
Take a look at the pics, the paint was actually in good shape before detail, but it felt like 80 grit sandpaper; now its smooth like glass. Swirls were completely gone from the body aftre the detail although the hood retained swirls and alot of marks. Later we figured out it had been repainted. Sorry, no direct sunlight shots, it was getting dark after I was done.
