Tried Klasse and Platinum this weekend

Test subject: red Hyundai accent with some big flaws in paint.

Products: Klasse AIO and SG. Platinum UPP

Accessory products: Mother's Showtime, DACP

I had polished the hood of my wife's red Hyundai last month to get rid of some scratches, so I didn't do it again this time. The two areas I did are the hood and the roof. The car was just recently washed, so I just QD'd the panels with Showtime and an MF.

I went ahead and applied AIO for the first time on the hood. The first try, I applied to much product, and waited a bit for it to haze, and had a heck of a time getting the finish to be streak free. I then applied SG, and was super cautious to use very little product, and the application was quite easy. I buffed and buffed, tried breathing on the paint, and QD, but there was a minor haze on the paint. After PM's with 4 DSC and Jngrbrdman for some advice and encouragement, reread Jimwh's instructions on Klasse application and started over because I was unhappy with the haze. This time, I lightly clayed the surface, and then applied the AIO thinly with a moistened terry applicator, and wiped off immediately. No problems. I went on to apply one coat of SG thinly and wiped off after 20 minutes with a bit of work.

Over the next 2 days, I applied 2 more coats of SG, each time, QD'ing the panel first.

Then, as I was doing this, I thought why don't I try some experimentation?

I went ahead and clayed the roof of the car after QD'ing it, then went at it with DACP and a yellow pad to remove some scratches and clean up the surface. I then applied AIO all over the roof and the moonroof. BUffed off immediately, no problems. Then I applied a thin coat of SG. While I was waiting for it to dry, I went ahead and put a coat of Platinum UPP on the hood which has 3 coats of SG on it. I used maybe a 1/4 oz on the whole hood, but I noticed that it hazes up more like #20, or a traditional wax, more than Klasse does. I waited 40 minutes before buffing the roof and the hood off.

Results? Both the roof and the hood look spectacular, except for the flaws in the paint that I mentioned earlier. But I suspect that the reflectivity and shine had more to do with my polishing than the sealants themselves. The real test came that evening.

We drove out in the rain, and I noticed some interesting differences in the hood and roof:

Roof: 1xAIO, 1xSG => large beads which sheet off the roof quickly. Dries with no water spots.

Hood: 1xAIO, 3xSG, and 1xPUPP => Small tight beads, very similar to #20. Sheets off hood quickly.

In both cases, after driving the car, almost all the water is flung off, unlike the other panels. And there are no water marks or anything. Even after 3 drives in the rain. This aspect is superior to #20.

Final analysis? I really like both Klasse and Platinum, but the Platinum is very easy to apply and remove, and way less finicky. No haze whatsoever. I am going to keep layering 2 more coats of SG on the hood, and then leave it with no Platinum topper. Then in the next month or so, we'll see how the Platinum holds up compared to the SG.

Great test.

I strongly recomend you to add more than one coat of UPP for a start. It's only after the 2nd layer that it starts to show

Glad you managed to fix that little hazing problem you had. :) I noticed also with my Klasse (untopped) that the beads were on the "large" size. Platinum sounds like a really nice product too, and I like how you're reporting it has more of a visible haze to it when it dries. I just wonder if it can fill in micro swirls the way multiple SG coats can....

This will be interesting to see how long the Platinum lasts. :xyxthumbs

PS: Does Platinum have any odor to it?

As far as I know SG lasts a little longer than UPP, while the last looks more reflective than the SG. I guess the right aplication between them is (and I'm doing it on my hood):

2 x AIO

2 x SG

2 x UPP

And then add a layer of UPP every month.

About the smell, it has a very pleasent one, nothing nasty like the SG.

I don't know if I would say the smell of PUPP is pleasant, but I agree that it's not nasty like SG. I would say that Platinum smells somewhat simiar to #20. The consistency is much thicker too. I just found it very easy to use, which is the big plus.

I think the SG is reasonably easy to use, but you have to get the technique down. And the drying/curing time is important too. I am going to try to leave it for an hour at least, for the next coat.

Ok, based on your suggestion, I am going to slap another coat of Platinum on the hood tonight, and of course another coat of SG on the roof.

Gee, I haven't been this excited since I got the PC! :D

Don't layer another coat of UPP before 24 hours after the 1st. And I'd do the same with SG, just in case.

This is my opinion: (both SG and UPP, more UPP)

1st coat

Wait one hour (2 if possible)

Buff

Wait 12-24Hours (UPP 24)

2nd coat

Wait one hour (2 if possible)

Buff

And so on. It'll be great this way.

Since you seem to be in this try things mode, apply and remove the AIO and follow it up with just the UPP on one section. Both products are extremely easy to use and really look great together.

Yeah, it'll be more than 24 hours by the time I get to try it tonight. I normally do 24 hours at least before a coat of anything.

Charles:

My thoughts exactly. I am going to AIO the spoiler in the back and then just PUPP on top. :)

By the way, today I started working in my hood as it had some new scratches from a cat that decided to go sleep over it :angry and this is what I did:

1 x (2 x certain places) Menzerna's intensive polish, rotary, compound foam

2 x Menzerna's final polish (glass like finish)

* extra step *

1 x Einszett Wax polish, a very mild cleaner with polymers (this step I decided at that moment, and glad I did. A great increase on reflection and smoothness, like it was finished)

2 x AIO - w/ the rotary

and in the end,

1 x SG (by hand), waited 2 hours and buffed.

Tomorrow I'll had another coat of SG, for protection, and Wednesday I'll start layering UPP, 2 or 3 coats.

Hi Charles :wavey

You're absolutely right, 2 x UPP over AIO (Menzerna Sealent Wax) looks great (you know what I mean ;) ).

The SG can be added as a protective measure, it lasts longer.

First of all, www.klassedirect.com is the place to get klasse. I got my klasse twins, 2 mf pads, and an mf towel for 42 bucks shipped. I have never used a product that was easier than klasse aio. This product really does wipe on and off with ease. The paint on my satin silver civic felt really smooth after just one application. You definitely need to clay b4 applying aio because it glides on much easier. The mf that came with the kit is very soft, and removed the klasse very easy. Mfs definitely make the products on and off much much easier than terry. The klasse has decent cleaning ability, but a very slick finish. I topped it with bf2, which imo isn't as easy as klasse aio, but applies on easy. Right now im having it dry on my car for the next few hours before i go buff it off. All in all, i think this combo will be great. I recommend anyone to have klasse aio as a base for any sealant or caranuba. As for the sg that i have, it will be my topper to aio on my honda ski.

I agree AIO is a great product. I originally applied AIO 2X and SG about 3X or 4X. I was pleased with the results, but not overly impressed. Once I started using P21S as a topper things got much better.

In hindsight, I wouldn't purchase KSG ... just AIO and P21S.
