Tree Sap Remover

Some people recommended Goof Off. I found some in my garage just now, but it isn't made SPECIALLY for cars. Its more of a all around type. It says its safe on paints with oil bases. Also Safe on glass.

It also contains Xylene.

I have some questions.

1) The dealer keeps putting those damned stickers on my windshield. Would that be okay to put on the window and get the stickers off without harming the glass?

2) How should I apply to the glass? Wet the paper towel first?

3) Is it safe on a clearcoated 2000 Oddessy's Paint? (Tree sap)

4) Should I rewash the spot I put the product on after I wipe it off?

5) Is Xylene gonna kill me if I inhale it?

Thanks for all these newb questions! But I have my first "Detail" tomorrow. Going to do a 2001 Oddessy (Work Van) and a 2002 Volvo S70 . Basically, wash, wax and interior. The owner told me about lots of tree sap!

1. It's ok to put solvents on glass. They will not hurt the glass.

2. I'd wet a rag first then wipe the glass. If you squirt or spray the solvent, some can land on upholstery or vinyl in the car and possibly cause damaged spots.

If you have to let the spot soak for a little while, wet a paper towel or tissue with the solvent, then lay it on the spot on the glass. The tissue will stick to the glass and prevent the liquid from dripping too easily.

3. I don't know for sure if it's safe on your particular paint, but it probably is. Polishes and bug and tar removers contain solvents and they don't harm the paint.

I've heard that for removing sap (from glass) it's sometimes better to use water only. Some rubbing will break the spots loose and the water will wash them away. Using some cleaners, like winshield washer solution with alcohol, just makes the sap smear on the glass so it makes a bigger mess.

4. Yes, I'd at least give the spot a rinse after using the solvent, whether it's on paint or glass.

5. No, just use it with ventillation, and DON'T SMOKE! Toluene is similar to the xylene you smell in airplane glue for toys.

Number 5: use ventilation, Lots and lots of ventilation. I personally wouldn't use it on the inside of the car.

It's not THAT bad. I've been using it for 28 years.

I think i'm going to have to use Goof Off on the inside windshield where they put those stickers on. I guess i'll leave the windows and doors open when I do it and let the car air out really well. I'll also spot "rinse" it!

Thanks for all the feedback!

Goo Gone for sticker residue is the best I've found.

Tree sap - I use Maguire's GC Bug and Tar remover.
