Trash cleanup

Here's something I've been wondering...

I see some before pics of wrecked out interiors and I see mountains of trash. Now, I know that the job of a detailer is to remove stains, blemishes, scuff marks, etc. But to me, it would seem kind of obnoxious to leave things like plastic cups, mounds of napkins, and other loose garbage. Those things aren't part of the vehicle's interior that needs cleaning. That's just garbage. The stray french fry I can understand since it might be unnoticed under a seat or something. But I'd be embarrassed to have someone see my mobile landfill regardless of the fact that it'll be cleaned up.

So, do you guys charge a little more when you have to do trash pickup?

I consider trash simply part of cleaning the interior. If it is obviously trash, then I simply throw it away. Everything that is questionable, I put into a plastic bag so they can sort through it themselves and throw it away at their own discretion.

Yea, I believe most detailers stuff everything into a plastic bag and have the customer go through the stuff and decide what they want/don't want.

Ok then...I just thought I could hear some of you guys think to yourselves as you go through interiors like that I'm a detailer, not a garbage man... I figured while the customer might not know how to detail their car, but they should know how to throw trash out at least. :chuckle:

But I guess in the end it means more billable time. :D

I remember one time reading a post on MOL someone who found panties in a customer's car. I forgot how he knew they didn't belong to the owners wife exactly, but he said that he never saw that customer again. :bolt

If it's straight garbage then i throw it away. But receipts or things like that i will keep.

What bothers me is people that don't clean up their cars. I mean i can work around alot but some cars have every nook and cranny filled with coins, maps, toothpicks or such.

I hear you on that. I come across junked out cars all the time, and it gets old. I do tack on extra charges for a complete wreck. And the post above about junk in every nook and cranny, I hate that. I had an expedition that took me an hour to get all the trash out....

When I get one of those "trash bin" cars I put EVERYTHING in a plastic bag and give it back to them. Be it a wristwatch or a toothpick it all goes in the bag for them to sort through.

Probably a little pair of panties and a really big wife....

I've found sex toys and catalogs in a customer's cars, porn DVDs, etc.

As far as trash goes, if it is really bad, I roll the extra time to remove it into the cost of the detail. I have spent a good 15-20 minutes just removing stuff and trash from people's vehicles.

So you've seen my daughter's car then, lol. I will tackle it about once a year and get it back to clean state, and then I'll ask her if she's kept it clean and she'll reply "yes" but when I go out and look at it, it's getting back to the state it was before. I don't know how people can drive in a garbage can.

Ditto.. as well as "used" baby diapers (I found the source of the odor in the car... :idea ), moldy pizza and other assorted crusted hardened foods... :wall

We got a call one day from a repo lot and went out to detail some old Infiniti. We removed two 50 gallon bags full of trash. Just piles of wrappers, packaging, magazines, and other assorted junk.

Very few people ever bother to clean out their vehicles for us. We find lots stuff. You wouldn't believe how many people leave credit cards and drug paraphenalia just lying around, many times out in the open. We'll hand someone their credit card and they'll say "Thanks, I've been looking for that." They act like it is no bid deal. Whatever. As long as the check doesn't bounce, we just detail it.
