Toyota paint is pretty thin

Doing stuff.
It's a good thing I'm doing this for free for a friend. Just practicing. Was wetsanding a scratch out... the scratch came out, but a burned an edge. Ugh. I'm too used to Mercedes paint I guess. I'll post some pics later.

Well, I have an ETG and was bit surprised that the paint on the hood and trunk of this Mercedes was thinner than the sides of the car. IIRC, the total paint film on them averaged only about 3.9 mils and the owner said the car was never buffed before. I guess either the paint "eroded" from the elements over 13 years or it was applied thinner on the hood and trunk for some reason :nixweiss, I'll have to tell the owner to keep all the paint thickness readings I recorded.

Toyota paint is pretty thin. Over on the Scion (sub-company of toyota) forums people are always complaining about how easy it is to get chips. People have pictures up of 6 month old cars that look sandblasted. I've had my car since the beginning of september and only have 1 chip on the front portion of my hood. I think people drive to close to the car in front of them. I've also noticed that it's a good bit softer than the chryser and VW paint that live at my house. Even with a foam gun and trying to be gentle I still have a little bit of marring.

I've had pretty good luck with my 2002 4Runner, However I had a full front end repaint this summer due to a fender bender.

before repaint...

I'd use a different four letter word to describe Toyota's paint.

Paint is horrible on my Scion... if you glare at it, it will scratch.

Shicks- That looks really fricking good. How do you get the glass to reflect so crisply?

Romanova- Try getting a foam gun. I washed my car without one for a month and it needed a light polishing afterwards. Since I got my gun I've kept marring to almost non-existent.

I don't know if you guys have this problem, but when I come out to the car in the morning and check out the marring before i get into the car (doesn't everyone do this?!) I looks alot worse than what I left it as. I got really pissed off a few times at this until I figured out that the additional "marring" is nothing but spider web silk.

That was probably Invisible Glass cleaner, I use NXT now, a little better.
