The automaker said it did not know when dealers could resume selling the cars and trucks because it had not yet determined a remedy to the problem, which in certain rare circumstances can cause the gas pedal to remain depressed after the driver's foot is removed.

that's too bad for toyota, i'm sure they are going to lose some sales here and there. my dad has a 07' camry and i have to tell you it's one of the biggest dissappointments in a car purchase he has made (should of gotten an Accord, which was his other option and he mentioned it as well) and i wish he would get rid of it. the interior is so bland, cheap looking, amongst a few other things. the only toyota i'm looking forward to seeing come out so far, is the new FT-86 pictured below...

I'd take the new Ford Fusion or Mercury Milan over the Camry, any day, but then I'm biased.

If the stuck-pedal accident, which resulted in the death of a family a few months ago, happened in Japan, we would see Toyota executives committing suicide by the Katana.

But unfortunately, this did not happen in Japan. And no one is going to die as a result of this large scale failure.

I used to be a Toyota fan until I rented one down in Florida. Brand new too. It was just a Matrix but it was a huge pile of junk. I always though Toyota had nice interiors but this thing had more cheap plastic than my old 94 Sonoma and it road like crap too. It made me appreciate our Fusion much more.

It's a joint venture between Toyota and Subaru, and will be powered by a Subaru boxer motor in RWD format. Rumor has it that Subaru may come out with their own AWD version (bigger and heavier, but more hp) as well.

Sorry for the minor threadjack,

obOnTopic . . . I wonder if the sticking gas pedal will turn out truly to be a mechanical problem, or if it's going to be similar to the "unintended acceleration" debacle that Audi had to deal with in the late '80's.

I'm thankful my wife's Highlander isn't in the recall! Here's my take on Toyota, they make good cars but they rushed to get to be #1 and cut corners with quality. You can get a nice car but you have to get the "Limited" version to get a nice interior, I know - had a Rav4 Sport with 4x4 and V6, great drive train, Dollar Tree interior.

I'm looking at Ford for my next car - actually - my daughter's car.

Toyota's been asking for trouble like this for the last ten to twelve years. They got a lot of praise heaped on them for redesigning cars from the ground up, and going from concept-to-production in around three years, but those of us who have worked in the auto industry, especially in the Tier One and Tier Two auto parts sector, openly questioned whether they could pull it off without big quality problems, and we got shouted down by some Toyota fans for even questioning the "almighty" Toyota. Well, it looks like there some credibility in questioning how fast they, Toyota, tried to move.

Some of the thing I learned, before I lost my job over two years ago, as an auto supplier sales rep, were astounding, like Toyota suppliers running prototype parts off the hard production tooling, and then sending in die repairmen to make modifications after the parts were tested. Hard tooling is usually ordered after most of the prototyping is finished, not simultaneously with finalizing the vehicle’s finished design. Too many short cuts in an balls-out effort to beat the competition.

I'll stick with my Ford products, thank you.

And there's the former Toyota lawyer accusing Toyota of deliberately hiding evidence of defects: Toyota found to keep tight lid on potential safety problems - latimes.com

Actually suing Toyota:

* A former Toyota lawyer who handled safety litigation has sued the automaker, accusing it of engaging in a "calculated conspiracy to prevent the disclosure of damaging evidence" as part of a scheme to "prevent evidence of its vehicles' structural shortcomings from becoming known" to plaintiffs lawyers, courts, NHTSA and the public.

As a result, plaintiffs attorneys are considering reopening dozens of product-liability suits against the automaker.

How would like to be the automotive manufacturer client, being sued by a former attorney who knows where all the bodies are buried?

so i'm on way to and back from the gym and notice on the freeway that toyota dealership looks bare (it was noticable), and at least 30% off their stock was gone...

I know how to put my car in neutral so I'm good with the sticking accelerator issue, however, Toyota, please bring back fun to drive cars. All of your lines are boring as hell, in the looks department and from the drivers seat.

I rented a Matrix on 2 occasions this past year and had the same experience. Cheap interiors, wasn't very peppy for a 4 cyclinder, the doors felt like they were cardboard thin. My old 1996 Cavalier Z24 felt like more of a car than that thing. Not to mention it's not a cheap car to buy, not at all.

Yeah the side panel between the front and rear door ended up falling off at some point too. LOL It was not a car I'd want to travel in again. We where going to choose the Versa too but the lady said the Matrix got better gas mileage so we just took it.

heck, my 03' civic is more sporty/fun to drive and has a better interior than the camry LOL...

I have to agree that for the price the lower end Toyotas are really not worth the aggravation. They really are irritating. Stepped into my buddies low end 2010 Honda Accord and was totally impressed. Stepped into a Ford Fusion at a dealer and if it wasn't for the Ford badge on the steering wheel I wouldn't have believed it!! This ain't your 90's Ford anymore lol :D

You can pull if it off if you are confident on the design and makes sense when it works, Otherwise, you have to deal with two tools to debug, etc.

It does take cooperation from the designer, manufacturing engineer, and the molder to pull it off. In many eng companies (I am think American companies) there is a lack of cooperation between the various groups. It is another culture thing. It is more toss it over the wall mentality.

It also shows they are not trying to get it right the first time...let's practice once because we have little confidence.

Ford is doing a fantastic job with interiors lately. They aren't perfect, but they look very nice for their price point.
