Tourist advice for Washington DC sought

If you are on a budget, I would recommend the TourMobile. http://www.tourmobile.com/

It's $20/adult and $10/child. It's an all-day shuttle service that runs from Arlington Cemetary throughout DC. You can hop on at the Smitsonian, Arlington, and Union Station Metro stops. Go early. It gets crowded.

You can get shuttle van service to the DC hotels. To/From all downtown Washington, DC Hotels $ 22 - 1st person & $ 10 each additional http://www.supershuttle.com/htm/cities/dca.htm

The Washington Post has a nice guide for DC that is kept up-to-date:

Looks like your itinerary's been covered. Just a quick note regarding transport from a daily commuter on the MARC trains & Metro; you can find most of this in a Frommer's guide as well.

-- CARDINAL RULE: Escalators--stand on the right, walk up/down on the left. Metro won't post signs (they call it a safety issue), but people are quite impatient about this one.

-- On the Metro platforms: Part like the red sea for the opening doors of arriving trains. Clearing the way for exiting passengers speeds up the whole exit/entry process, since they can go out two wide, instead of single-file past the dummies who crowd the door. Another benefit is that people won't knock you down either: I've seen tourists who stand in front of doors get shoved to the side by egressing commuters, at the very least it will merit a few rude comments.

-- Stops on the Metro are listed on various vertical 'poles' on the platforms, and station maps are usually at one end of the cars' interiors near the doors. This isn't always apparent.

I know the first two may seem really uptight, but the people who have to work here can get awfully impatient with tourists, who are typically moving at a more leisurely pace. Just be conscious of other people, and you'll be okay. Have a great time, it's a great city.

Good point I also tried to sit near the map so I could track my progress.

If time permits go to Arlington Cemetary. It is VERY moving and emotional. I'm proud to report both of my sons went their on their own (separate trips) while I was on business and they were inspired by the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Hey everyone, I am back from my US (and a bit of Canada) holiday. Actually got back last week but work has been frantic since my return and I haven't had time to visit Autopia.

I just wanted to send a big THANK YOU to all the members who provided useful information and advice for our trip.

We were so lucky with the weather while in Washington but copped scatterred rain for the rest of the trip which fortunately it did not have a major impact on our activities.

I couldn't believe the number of Toll roads you have over there in the East and Mid West. Cost a fortune.

Thoroughly enjoyed the trip and American hospitality, as usual. :D
