Topper Wax/Sealant - Prefered method of application

Well, there are as many theories about the best methods of wax/sealant application as there are product companies, so i decided to make a thread to find out what the majority of people prefer to do.

Wax & Sealant toppers can be applied in a multitude of ways, from a PC 7424 with a soft finishing pad, to a regular foam pad applied by hand in a circular motion....and lastly with a foam pad applied by hand in a back and forth motion (typically in the direction that wind travels across the car).


Anyhow, i was simply interested in everyone's opinion on what you guys/gal think is the most effective, efficient and/or favorite method of application, and why.

I found that applying wax/sealant toppers by hand with a foam pad in a circular motion is quite fast and easy to do.

However, applying in a back and forth motion (typically in the direction that wind travels) can help reduce the risk of re-introducing swirls and micromarring.

Nowadays I do back and forth with either a Yellow App or MF App.

MF - Sealant (Mainly UPP), you must mist the App, the UPP and water make it very easy to apply.
Yellow APP - S100 - Works great, easy to use

I still don't understand why I see soo many car care companies advertising products on commercials in a circular motion! (Meguiars Gold Class and Mothers) If you had a perfectly clean / contaminant free surface I would do circular, since it applies so easily, but its a VERY big risk.
 
UPP, NXT ...
Usually one coat by hand ... some areas back and forth some in ovals (almost back and forth but with a loop at the end) depending on how the product goes on.
Second and third coats by PC at 3 1/2 using a finishing pad.
Always wipe off with a MF by hand
This gives me complete coverage and the PC speeds up the process
 
I guess I have to ask this question in this thread, since I feel it applies. If one applies a wax or sealant by hand in a straight back and forth method in the direction the wind travels and yet uses a buffer, well, since the buffer travels in circles... What's the difference then?

That is why personally, if I know everything is clean, I do not worry too much if I am applying wax or sealant back and forth or in circles. When it comes to polishes though, the back and forth motions are easier to hide or should I say less visible if they are not completely removed.
 
for the final waxing, i prefer to go by hand, and use a microfiber foam applicator pad with some pure canuba wax. im using mothers canuba wax as a substitute right now, until i can get my hands onto some megs #16/nattys/Souvern (not in my lifetime :() as for how i apply wax, i like to use the back and forth motion, not the circular motion. ive heard somewhere that it risks making swirls, and i found that by doing the back and forth motion its "more organized" for me

I will bite :rolleyes: . I apply both sealant/wax combo (on black AIO/PB EX /ps21 and on silver AIO / wolfgang / Poorboy's EX-P (love this new stuff. Thanks Steve!!) and no wax since it looks yummy).

I apply all by hand using high quality foam pads and mf pads. I use the straight back and forth motion. Using a buffer is great too as many on this site will point out. I personally like to be "hands on" (part of the enjoyment). However, impo I would stick to applying wax/topper by hand as am afraid of going crazy with the buffer:lmfao .
 
When I hand apply Trade Secret using the Poorboy's PVA applicator I go straight back and fourth - Others I will use small circular motions but follow the path of front to back :)
 
I prefer to use hand application in straight lines for my topper coats. I'm a big fan of Viking Handi-Grip Applicators for the final coat. They are easy to hold and the foam is dense enough to prevent too much absorbtion of product.
 
I apply by hand. That's what I've always done and will most likely continue to do.

But hey, you never know, one of these days you guys might convince me to do otherwise.
