time for me to go to car max and drop some buissness cards. cha ching

There's tons of work to be done there but I'd bet they wont pay much. Even if just the hoods were corrected it would be a huge improvement.

with all the work i could pick up from car max i would charge $75 per car to polish and still be able to make like $1500 per week. and with what quality they have for detailers i could rush through each car in like 30 minutes and they would still be happy.

CarMax contacted me about detailing cars for them when they first came into the area. When I told them my prices and that I didn't offer a dealer discount, they asked "why no discount" and I said I'm not turning down full priced jobs to do their cars for less. The guy said he'd keep calling around then.

Amazing they'd rather save $50 per car and put crap out on their lots.

Best way to describe them is the Wal-Mart of used cars. Its all about volume. They actually have bean counters that review every part of the recovery process and try to further reduce costs. They used to outsource their paint and body work, but now they are even doing some of that in house. The work is HORRIBLE.

Funny thing is, I heard the detailers at Carmax make pretty good money. You would think they would be more competent.

+1, thats what I heard too.

I had a friend that USED to work at carmax. He told me loads of cars are all swirled up like that, but they didn't fix it.. UNLESS the customer brought the car back and complained within 30 days of their purchase.

he also told me they used to have some guy in a mobile truck come do touch up jobs on the paint. He would use a portable air compressor and spray panels in the back lot, outside in the parking lot....

Scott, your thread is what pushed me to post the pictures.

Their environment defines competency as high throughput, not high quality. Their management rewards them for doing poor quality work as long as it’s barely tolerable (in their eyes, which is obviously miserable to ours) and quick.

PC.

I worked at carmax not too long ago as a detailer and as an inventory associate. Inventory associates are the ones that preform the Final Quality Inspection. Any problems that are found have to be fixed. The problem is that most inventory people havent the slightest clue what the car should look like and the fact that they get paid $8-9 an hour makes them not paid enough to care.

You can still get a autopian standard detail at certian places. Because there are still detailers that work at carmax that would rather spend an extra hour perfecting the finish then to get it done in less time and have it kicked back for a repair that they do no get paid to do.

The detailers dont get paid for the kickbacks so they dont take their time on them resulting in those bad holograms, ect. Most of the final quality control is done in a small building where there isnt any suitable lighting to show swirls, buffer trails, ect.

There are always going to be good and bad experiences with any dealership and it comes down to the management making sure that they produce a quality product within a fashionable time frame.

If you guys have any questions about how anything works there i can give you the answer.
