Dream Machines
Weather today was spot on so I took my car for a spin and then put it in the carport and decided to stick my mid 90's hilux in (boring white) for some research and development

First up was the slightly rusted right side of the roof, from years of copping industrial fallout

Clayed with opti clay which is very hard to knead

3M waffle white pad with 3M P III RC (mostly sits on the shelf) at 600-1300 rpm

Results were pretty good, some of the rust spots were removed and got rid of that dingy white/grey look

Clayed again and followed with PPG paints Final glaze 2000 (ppg system one replaced this three years ago) with 3M black pad

It's a wet look polish which looks like chocolate milk

Clayed again to make sure all the fallout was gone and rust spots were removed

Sealed with GPI duraglaze (aussie product)

Left side had far more rust spots so I decided to give the optimum polish and makita wool pad a go.

600-1300 rpm and although the rust spots didn't budge, the finish was very nice

Followed with sonus sfx 2 (version 2 on one half, version 1 on the other)

Same result with both but far easier use made v2 win out.

Sealed with KSG spray and wipe method

Next up was the glass polish shoot out between autoglym, sonus and DP glass restorer

separate 3M black pads were used at no more than 1400 rpm

Autoglym was no problem to use but the ammonia smell of it really annoys me

Good results on very neglected front windscreen

Sonus which smells like spearmint and is far more pleasant was easier to use and optical clarity is far better than what autoglym could achieve

DP's product by machine is a little messy but works great. Removed some waterspots with ease.

On the remaining glass I gave both sonus sfx 2's a whirl with great results.

Got more marring out with these

The painted, black plastic side mirror backings have been in need of a polishing for ages, badly oxidised.

For this I gave the poorboys SSR 2 a go again with 3M black

At 600-1100 rpm and a minute of work, I was blown away by the clarity, not a single scratch remained and it turned out better than the buffed paint, crystal clear

SFX 3 (Version 1) and CK VM with edge blue pad gave it a nice wet look reflective finish and for sealing, WG plastic surface sealant got the nod.

Removed some really bad marks on the dashboard with PB pro polish and rotary at 600-900 rpm.

By this time I was just stuffing around and even rotary buffed the front right tyre with autoglym 07B to de oxidise and give it some serious shine which autoglym vinyl and rubber care (spray and walk away method) finished off.

Over the coming weeks I will be giving the hilux a serious summer overhaul and will provide detailed info on the results

Can't wait as I have a few rarely used products from my 45 brand strong collection that I want to use.

Am I reading this right? You had the rotary inside the cabin buffing the vinyl with pro polish?

I don't know where you got the idea to do that but I'd like to see pics!

Sorry guys, I have no camera, yes buffing the vinyl does seem crazy but that's just who I am, I'll try anything.

Everything I buy gets used on every surface of a car and some turn out to be good at at least three types of surfaces

NOTE TO SELF - MUST BORROW DAD'S 5 mega pixel camera

The hilux being white doesn't make for the ideal guinea pig to do R & D on but it's the only car that I can mess around with and not worry if I burn the paint etc
