I need a new job
This is just about trash that is found in a car/truck that you are detailing. Have any of you encountered someone who just has crap all in the inside of their vehicle? By that I mean, clothes, old food bags, books, cups....things like that. How do you decided what is or isn't trash? Do you request that they take all of their personal belongings out of the vehicle before hand? I know it sounds like alot, but it is really just a general question. Thanks for any and all resposes :howdy
 
When it doubt, put it in the paper bag.
I once threw out pebbles, and the little girl was crushed. They were mixed with McFries and lego and gum in a crappy car--a kid van. There you go.
 
Yes, I simply ask the client to remove all their personal belongings from the car beforehand. Nobody has had a problem with it, and I suppose it is kind of expected. I never use to worry about it until I had a gentleman that left me his SUV absolutely full of stuff. He wasn't there so I had to empty everything myself...took about a half hour just to unload the vehicle. After that, I make sure to tell people to empty the car prior to my arrival.
 
i have found most customers will remove their stuff but if they don't i put it all in a box, or bag and put it in the trunk or back cargo area.i never replace the items as a way of politely hinting, "clean your stuff out first please"
 
Most times if someones going to have a full detail done, they have already removed everything. If not i just throw everything of no value away. Clothes,shoes, etc. I'll throw in the trunk.

Now if its a wash and vac deal, and there is a ridiculous amount of trash and personal objects. I'll work around it cause the way i look at it, i'm not being paid to move/remove all that junk. And if the customer is unhappy, well thats not the type of customer i want. I don't want to have to spend 20 minutes removing junk to spend 5 minutes vacuuming.
 
I once detailed a guy's car. His wife hired me to do it as a "surprise." Well, it must have been pretty surprising, because there was all kinds of junk left in the car. There were shoes, papers, a baseball mitt, and even CREDIT CARDS. I put everything in a plastic bag and stacked the credit cards on the center console to say "look what you forgot."
 
My detailing partner and I did a family van once that was absolutely horrible. Don't get me wrong, the cleaned up most of the visible trash before leaving it with us, but I was disgusted at what we found under the seats. I swear I could have made a full meal out of all the dropped food I found.
 
With the exception of maps in the map pockets, or umbrellas, everything I find goes into a bag that gets stuck in the trunk or cargo area. I only throw away obvious trash like food wrappers, napkins, etc.

I once even found hypodermic needles from insulin shots in a guy's car (under the seat). I just double-ziploc bagged them, and put them in the trunk for him to dispose of.
 
I like to ask the owner to take out what they dont want me to throw out, and from their anycups of wrapers i get rid of but if theres somthing that im in question about i put it in a bag and when they come back i ask them. They want it perfect if not i throw it out (or keep it if its cool lol)
 
This is what I expected to hear. Thanks everyone, I guess judgement and being on the careful side of judgement is the only way to go. If there is any doubt at all, don't get rid of it.
 
After doing a couple of big suvs that were loaded with stuff ( approx. 1 hr to empty ) I now tell all my cust. that the vehicle must be emptied of all items they deem non garbage prior to my arrival, stressing arrival, you would be surprise how many cust used to come out after I got there and then would spend 30 - 45 min. deciding what to keep or toss.
