To use Random Orb or by hand?

ok, im doing my detail tommorow, and one last question...

Should I use my $20 Random Orbital from WalMart, or do it all by hand?

The 10" Random Orb is said to be 2600RPM, and it plugs in. I was going to buy 2 new Terry Bonnets (for Wax and Glaze) and then a Wool (for Polish).

Or, should I do it by hand, with a few foam (for wax/glaze) and 2 terry (for polish)

I will be using #9, #7, and #26

I dunno, I don't have any experience with that kind of buffer, so I'd feel more comfortable doing at least the polishing step by hand. And I would NOT use a wool pad with the #9, wool's too aggressive for that product. Stick with foam or terry.

I don't see any problem using it with foam pads for #7 and #26. Probably wouldn't be a problem to use terry, but the foam is gonna be more gentle.

but i can oonly use the foam if i do it all by hand (the dont sell a foam bonnet that I saw there for some reason).

I dont mind doing it all by hand, but i really dont wanan spend all day doing all this.

So would possibly just 3 terrys on the buffer be ok? I move quite fast, so dont really need to mess with heat at all.I will then be removing all with MFs

There's really no problem with heat, those big random orbits don't generate too much. But I don't believe you'll have good luck with the application of #9. Moving fast is something you just cannot do with a product as mild as Swirl Remover. Depending on the condition of your car, you may need more than one application. Harsher products are available, but I would not use them with the orbital.

I think you're best bet is to go by hand. Even the #7 is not something I would use with the orbital. I remember getting one as a gift a few years back, and I just wasted product and bonnets...not to mention time. If the car takes all day, then so be it...it might take more. If you feel like stopping, then do it. But I don't think you'll be happy with the results that the orbital will give, and all of these products are proven to work well by hand. Good luck!

actually, thinking about it, after using the orb once, and then doing it by hand, there were no visable advantages.

I think ill just go by hand

But now my question, do I use all foam pads? Or some of those terry hand ones?

No, use all foam pads with the products you've mentioned. They'll work just fine and IMO don't use as much product as their terry counterparts.

Most Autopians like foam applicators, but I can't get them to work effectively in removing swirls. Some, including Scottwax, swear by cotton towels because they give "extra bite." I would try both cotton and foam, and see what best works for you. I, however, haven't tried it as I have yet to find a cotton towel that is soft enough...

I have used both cotton terry and foam apps. I like foam apps for applying sealants, because they don't soak up as much product; therefore, allowing really thin coats and not wasting my product. But for swirl removal and paint cleaners and glazes, I prefer, the cotton apps or towels. They have more "bite" and seem to do the job better. YMMV.

I agree with you both. I use a foam app for #9 and everything else down the line, but anything more serious I always grab a terry applicator.

That is, of course, only when my PC and I are not together:(
