To QD or not

I live in a small, rural Midwest town. It is often windy here. I think with our close proximity to farm fields the wind carries more dirt than in a larger city.



I don't have a garage. To keep the car looking good, it needs cleaning almost everyday. But I'm not sure if it is safe to QD. I've never done one.



I'd like some guidelines on how to determine when it is or isn't safe to QD.

Here's my take on QD'ing. I only QD what I believe is "dust". I won't QD what I believe is dirt! When dust mixes with water or moisture (morning dew... etc.), it becomes "dirt". QD'ing dirt is a sure way to get swirl marks! If it's dirt............. I wash it!



Don't get me wrong, I still think QD'ing is a good thing to do.......... just be careful your not QD'ing when you should be washing. Also, QD'ing is great to get bird "stuff" and other contaminants off the paint before they do harm........... when you can't wash.
 
At one time the area where I worked was loaded with construction and all the dust that goes with it. I used the CCD before I used the QD and the car survived it quite well. No scratches and it always looked good. Well, for the first hour or so, then the dust was starting to accumulate again. The caution about dust that has been wet goes even more so for the CCD. When that happens, I think you have to wash the vehicle.

Charles, I would have thought that dust from construction was capable of scratching. Perhaps I'm being too cautious.

That's interesting. Since I live in an area that usually gets morning dew, that would mean I should only QD in the few hours between washing my car and going to bed (I don't get up before the morning dew).

Too cautious, probably not. You need to go with whatever you are comfortable with. I didn't have any problems, but that doesn't mean you won't. Try it in an area on your car that is in that inconspicuous place all the manufacturers list on their products. Just try a small area and see if you feel OK with it. If you aren't, then polish out whatever damage you find and don't use it anymore. I really think you will find the results to your liking, but who knows better than you?

CCD and QD as soon as you get home. That takes care of the dust. QD with the morning dew, (and no dust), won't hurt a thing and you will be ready for another day.

Once the car is older I'll be open to trying out if QD causes problems. Right now I can't bring myself to experiment with it.

I don't follow. What is the need for a QD in the morning if there's no dust?



I usually do get dust overnight though.

That makes sense. And it does allow for QD'ing before it dries.



I work at home and don't use the car first thing in the morning. I have to start going out and paying attention to when all this dew stuff is taking place. :)

To get rid of the water spots from the moisture you said accumulates on your car overnite.

QD is not just for dust. Works great for bug splatters, bird droppings, any of the weird things that seem to magically appear on your, or at least my, paint.

No need to be scared of Qding. I always do it after a wash, it's great. Just CCD and QD before you go out.

I agree :) The combo of CCD and QD works especially great because the CCD takes care of like 90% of the dust anyway and then you take off the tiny bit left over with QD.
