It my humble opinion that smoothies made with vanilla ice cream taste better than smoothies made with plain or vanilla yogurt.

I hope you mean low fat ice cream. ;) I make smoothies all the time and like the yogurt. I also have one of these right near me so I go there often as well.

Low fat or not the ice cream taste better. Right now I'm finishing one made with Edy's Grand Light Rich and Creamy Vanilla. 1/2 the fat. I too like the yogurt but ice cream is better.

Rabbi, Me thinks there is a problem in your definition of terms. I believe what you are drinking is a Milk Shake NOT a Smoothie. Though I'm sure it is smooth going down. :cool

FWIW I make our smoothies and use either yogurt or kefir as the base.

Smoothies, Milk shakes, gotta love em whatever you call them. Yes, I know there is a difference, but they both rock. :headbang

Mr. Clean my good man. My smoothies are made with a cup of ice cream or yogurt,a 1/2-3/4 cup of orange juice, 1 scoop of whey protein, strawberries, blueberries, banana, peaches, pineapples and a handful of ice. Sometimes I add an apple or kiwi. This is not a milkshake in Cincinnati.

That sounds like a smoothie to me.

Aren't "milkshakes" just milk, ice cream (or frozen yogurt) & flavouring?? :dunno

Yes, if you add strawberries to milk, ice cream (I never heard of using frozen yogurt in a milk shake :dunno ) and you have a strawberry milk shake...banana milk shake and so on...

Rabbi, since you are making them yourself, you can call them what you like. Were you to go to a smoothie shop, I doubt ice cream would be an ingredient offered...even in Cincinnati...or Cleveland :D

I usually have a smoothie for breakast. My recipe comes from Men's Health and is pretty good.

1 cup skim milk
2 tbl lowfat yogurt
1 tbl natural peanut butter
1 tbl ground flax seeds
1/2 cup or more frozen berries
1 scoop whey (vanilla or chocolate)
1 pkg instant oatmeal nuked in 1/2 cup of water
6 ice cubes or so.

Tasty, filling and a big punch of nutrition. :mohawk

No they would not add ice cream.Ice cream is a special additive I use to treat myself when I don't want to use yogurt. I like vanilla whey the best.

Scott P, my basic smoothie recipe is similar. I don't "nuke" my oatmeal, I put in the the VitaMix first and "blend" it into powder. I also use more yogurt (or kefir) @ 8 oz.

Whose whey product do you use? I use either Whey To Go or Ultimate Whey (I think) both products from Whole Foods Market

Have you found a good source for your ground flax seeds? Seems to be a product which can oxidize quickly. I try to grind my own, or use liquid (Barlean's)

I'll have to try the peanut butter! How about peanut butter and banana? Call it the Elvis :bigups

There is a Planet Smothie right up the street from my building and they have a bananna and peanut butter smoothie called the Elvis. Kinda spooky Mr. Clean....... :)

I use either EAS Simply Whey or Optimum Nutrition Whey. I'll get them from GNC with my Gold Card or via online. I buy whole flax seeds then grind them in a small coffee/spice grinder just before use.

The peanut butter is a nice addition. I use the natural unsalted variety.

Last night I substituted apple juice for orange. A very different taste but delicious nonetheless. Today I used Sunny D instead of orange juice. It's tangier so therefore I like it better than the OJ.
