Tire cleaning (what am I doing wrong?)

A week ago I purchased some Mothers Tire & Rubber Cleaner. It was my first time applying tire dressing, so I admit I wasn't entirely sure of what to do. But I made sure the tires weren't hot, and sprayed the product direcly onto the sidewalls. I used a sponge to spread everything around then wiped off immediately after. The result was a clean, matte finish.

Today when I followed the same technique, any visible shine disappeared within seconds, and the tires were left looking dull (as if I didn't do anything). In addition, many areas of the tire have these orange/faint red discoloration to them. I think it looked that way before (had a long road trip) but I would've thought a pressure wash plus the tire dressing would have removed them.

Any idea on what my problem is, or what I should use to fix it? It's annoying having every angle of my car look spotless but then these ugly tires, which are fairly new BTW.

Thanks :)

Let's get some terms straight, here. You say you bought Mother's Tire & Rubber Cleaner. Then you talk about putting a dressing on. Is the dressing you are referring to the Mother's T&RC? Because that's not a dressing, it's a cleaner...and probably why you are unable to get it to produce the appearance of a dressing.

Switch to Mother's Reflections tire care if you like Mother's, hit the tires weekly with 3:1 APC and a brush before applying the dressing. Rubber cleaners are pretty much useless IMHO.
