Tip Your Barber?

Mine used to charge $13, but I used to give him $15 every time. My wife and I were looking to save money for our wedding reception in June, so we both cut out haircuts until then. She cuts mine herself with trimmers, and she's growing hers out (I like the long hair). You can't beat a gorgeous barber that works for free. :)

I usually tip $5 for a $12 haircut. Quite a good $12 haircut; that's the going rate in a small West Michigan town. Never really thought to give more for Christmas. Do you guys tip the mailman at Christmas?

Last time my wife went to the same salon I go to, her car came back covered in muddy paw prints! I'm thinking of not going back at all; on the other hand we've been going there for 6 years and never had a problem before. The whole hood needs polished. Sorry about the rant.

Yeah, just $10 but I figure it's enough as he's a young kid.

I'd have a polite talk with the folks there (I assume your wife wasn't present or otherwise able to prevent the situation). I wouldn't not patronize the place over it, at least not without knowing all the facts. Might've been some utterly unique situation.

I can't not go there, it's a one person establishment and my wife is friends with the owner. She's out in the sticks, really, and has cats and dogs. I might mention it politely; I might just let it go.

I probably should tip the mailman next Christmas.

Oh gee, I just noticed that we're discussing the *mailman* and not the *paper boy* :o

I never tip the mailman...I probably oughta but I don't. Part of it is that we often have a substitute, especially on holidays, but maybe I'm just rationalizing  I gotta give this some thought over the next nine months...

itb76- I bet there's *some way* to resolve the pet issue without anybody getting upset. Some good friends of ours have had dogs that, uhm.. got overly excited around my vehicles and I was always able to get the situation squared away. Heh heh, cats can be anothe matter, but I've been lucky in that regard :D

My stylist charges me $25 and I give him $35. He had his own salon with his wife for a while and she used to do my hair. When they got divorced I started having him do it since we both had sport bikes and hung out a lot anyway.

IMO you get what you pay for. I have not gone to a "Mutts n' Cuts" type shop in a long time! :D

Our local newspaper moved their printing out of town, fired all the kids delivering the papers (only adult carriers now), then got rid of most of their local staff. Between that and that we didn't read it half the time, we just don't get the paper anymore. I'd just as soon get it only on Sunday, but they don't do that so the heck with them.

The mailman, on the other hand, is usually the same guy, but sometimes has substitutes. They all drive their own vehicles, put in long hours, and generally do a good job. I probably should have been tipping them all along.

Some time ago I heard you should tip the cleaning people in a hotel. I've never known anyone to actually do this. Does anyone and how much?

itb76- Our local paper has also instituted changes that I don't care for. If I had an alternate source for daily local news I'd drop that rag in a heartbeat.

Given the circumstances with your mail delivery, I'd say that yeah, you oughta tip him. Sounds like they're a lot more invested in the whole thing than my guy.

And yeah, I tip cleaning people if I stay a few days. At the resort we frequent we leave $10/$20 (depending on a lot of things), often for both the day and night crews. In regular hotels where the service is once-a-day, I find out if it's the same person/crew working the whole time I've been there and only tip if that's the case. These days I seldom tip less than $10...I might go to $5 but that hardly buys a pack of smokes (which for some reason is sorta a litmus test for me). I don't mind tipping as I also don't hesitate to make demands (um..."requests") either ;)

General rule in my book: if you even think of tipping the answer is "yes" and you oughta give enough that a normal person in that situation oughta appreciate it (whatever that threshold is to you but try not to be a skinflint). I find that being a generous (but not extravagant or "showy") tipper helps grease my path through life and I'm very conscious of how much many people depend on tips. I can say without any qualification that people I tip remember it if/when I go back, whether it's a diner or a hotel or, well...anywhere.

I consider tips to be a built-in part of the cost of things (if I can't afford the tip I can't afford the whole thing period) and I've never (AFAIK) offended anybody by offering a tip. I *have* had people decline them, and I don't push the matter but rather express my appreciation verbally and/or maybe write a nice letter to the management.

IME folks who "treat the little people right" generally have a better ride in this life, even if you don't buy into the whole karma thing.

I just cut my own hair. Have been for years. Much cheaper than having a barber cut it. Although my hair is curly...so it is a bit more forgiving.

Holy crap! Where are you guys getting your hair cut? Been watching too much Queer Eye For The straight Guy? LOL ;)

My barber charges $10 and I give him $12. It took me forever to find a barber I liked. This guy is an old school barber. Just a tiny place with 2 chairs.

i love the oldschool barbers. when i was in the service, these guys were everywhere. now that im out there hard to find. although i found one about a year ago! he is great 10 bucks im in and out in like 15 minutes and perfect eveytime i pay him a 20 and say thanks!!!

I like the barbers themselves, just wish they could give me the same cut I get in a salon. I still send my previous barber a Christmas card every year, he's a swell old guy who's lead an interesting life.

Same as everyone else. Took me a while to find her, and I love the haircuts. Tip $8 on $16 cut. $24 is a steal IME... lol

Wow, hard to believe a haircut in West Michigan is less than East Texas, everything else is more up here.

There's an old school barber in the the town I work in. Kind of strange guy, you can walk in where there are no customers there, but if you didn't call for an appointment he won't cut your hair...

Plenty of barbers offer sub-$10 cuts around here, but I think I'll stay where I'm at :dance

It's weird you say that, I went through 5 different shops before some guy I used to serve told me about his shop, it's the same as you described. He doesn't use any of those electric buzzers.
