Tinter scratched new car what to do?

A couple weeks ago I posted that I had bought a brand new 2004 Maxima. Last thursday I took the car to have the windows tinted and later that evening while washing the car I noticed some scratches on both of the front doors below the windows. The scratches consist of a couple small scratches that go through the clearcoat into the base coat. These are approx. 1/16 to 1/8 inches long and around them the clearcoat is marred by what looks like a snap or button from the window tinters pants. I called the shop and spoke with the owner about the problem. He stated that he would pay to have a detailer he knows remove the marring from the paint.



Okay, here's my dilema. I'm scared to let his detailer touch the paint on my new car. The guy may be good but how do I know? I'm almost 100% sure I can remove all of the marring with my PC and some DACP, and if I need to I can do scratch repair on the clearcoat (I've done it successfully on other cars). But I really think the window tinters should take some additional responsibility for this. What should I do? Ask for my $ back? Any replies are greatly appreciated. :nixweiss
 
I feel your frustration. My wife has a Mercedes that came back from the dealer service with a big tire smuge on the door; as if a tire rolled into it. My first thought was why should I waste my time wearing my arm out on this? Bottom line: If you want it done right, do it yourself.
 
I agree with both of you. I really don't want paint work done but it seems like the obvious solution. This really bums me out.

The same thing hapenned to me at the "tinters" on my brand new 03 Maxima. I didn't notice it until i was washing it that same night.



I brought it back the next morning and they agreed to fix it. They did a really good job. You would never be able to find where the scratch was. I know where it was on my fender, but i could not pinpoint the exact spot. That's how good the repair was.



My car is Sheer Silver if it makes a difference ?

Your car looks great. I've used S100 SEC and Paste Wax on mine so far. I have some #26 paste that I may try. My boss uses #7 and #27 on his silver vette and it looks awesome. I may give that a shot next time. Gotta love that silver!
 
If it were my car, I would find out where the Ferrari and Porsche guys take there cars in town for paint work and then take my car to them for an estimate. I would go back to the shop that did the damage and explain to the owner that when it comes to paint/body repair work I only trust the BEST shop in town. Tell the owner you'll accept a check for the amount of the estimate or have the owner contact the shop to verify that they will do the work and send him the bill. If he decides to write the check, pocket the money and repair it yourself. If not, at least your car will be in the hands of the "more reputable" guys in town.:xyxthumbs
 
When you bring the estimate to the tint shop, you could start the conversation off politely with something like...........



"Hello again Mr. Smith, how are you today? Well, I spent the last day or so thinking about your offer. Quite frankly, I feel that since my car is Brand New it deserves the BEST touch-up job possible. So I called my ATTORNEY, told him about my situation, and asked him 'where do you take your Porsche 911 when it gets scratched?' ".



Then hand him the estimate! :sign :cool:
 
That's why I stay with my cars, in the bay, when they work on them.



They're less likely to be careless when someone is standing there watching.

Alright, I'd ask first that they need to use fender covers and other items to protect the areas, as well as removing belt buckles or rings etc.



Since they did not take precautions, get estimate from detailers and dealer approved bodyshops and hand him the bill or deduct it from the cost of the work they performed.



The Lexus dealer knowes that when anyone works on my SC430, they are NOT to have exposed belt buckles and use a MF backed fender cover. No washing is done to my car as well when they are done. All interior work, they cover the seats in plastic bags, and don a Tyvek suit. Interior is Ecru, which is as close to white I'd like to come to. They know how anal I am and have no problem with it, and have implemented some of the requests I ask for in normal work on customer cars.
