Tint Removal

Pays attention to detail.
This week I had a lady call my shop and ask if I did Window Tint Removal.
My answer was, "Not yet." But, I agreed to take a look at her's and see what I could do. She only need the rear window of her Camry done.

I started to peel off the tint... it came off with no problem. Then, I realized that there was another clear layer underneath it. This only came up with great difficulty. After removing a small section I notice that under
this layer, still, was a fine coat of glue that covered the entire window.

Needless to say, it was a tough job. 2 razor blades, 2 employees, a half-gallon of paint thinner and 3.5 hours later - we we're done. We scraped off
every bit of this booger-like glue substance; all while dodging the defrost strips with our razors.

Guys, is there ANY easier way to remove window tint?
I'd like to be able to offer this service at my shop for $50 per front/back and
$20 per side window. Any thoughts?

peace,
michael

P.S. We also tried a heat gun - didn't work.

What i do is spray a large amount degreaser like simple green on the tinted window. then take a large black trash bag, you may need 2. split it in half so its one layer and apply it to the window. I run my hand across it to make sure i have a smooth coverage of the entire window.

I was shown this and don't know the exact details of how it works but In about 30 min to an hour you'll be able to peel the tint and glue off in one peice. You'll have a few spots where you need to use a razor blade but doing this makes things alot easier.

give a try next time.

3M adhesive remover should take that out pretty easily. Truedetailer has a great method, it holds your solvent on to the window and lets it work.

Tintdude.com should have the answer. I think that i read there about spraying ammonia on it and covering it up with dark plastic for a while.

I did my first window tint removal about a month ago, and I've since then done two more for people who are needing to get car inspections. This is how I do it: I went to wal-mart and bought their 1000 watt electric steamer in the iron section. For the side windows, I pointed the steamer at the window, cut a tiny slit w/ a razor blade to start peeling back the film. With window tint, theres actually two sections to it. One side is the film and then on the back side is the sticky adhesive stuff. The steamer got the tint extremely hot, and as I peeled back slow, the glue stuck to the film and NOT the window, so no razor blade was needed.
NOW, for the back window, there can be problems. You should never consider a regular razor blade for the back window because of the defrost bars, and in some cases the antenna. The best way to do this, is on a warm day, take a bottle of 409, yes i said it, and spray the xxxx out of the inside of window, covering the tint. Then take a black garbage back and outline the inside of the window. The 409 actually seeps into the microscopic pours of the film and makes the glue stick just to the film in direct sunlight. After about 15-30 min, pull the tint off slowly and you'll see that all you need to do is take a soapy spunge to clean the remainder of the excess....I learned about the back window technique from one of the "coldest" window tint ppl in the south. He's won competitions in Vegas, California, and Florida. You should actually bag the back window first, and have it in sunlight before you start doing your side windows...That way you give the back window plenty of time to get hot. And yes, you could prob use the steamer for the back window too, but on most cases, the back window will be bubbling up, so the bag technique is the best way to go---since using a steamer would leave the glue behind where the bubbles were. ya diiiig?

As mentioned, the biggest problem to watch out for on back windows is that you don't scrape the rear defroster off -- I've seen this happen more than once, and had it happen to me once and I had to go back with a repair kit and reapply a few chunks that I accidentally scraped off.

I use window cleaner spray it on the window and then cover with a black garbage back if its the back window turn th defront on and leave it in the sun for about 30-45 minutes you can leave the car on with the heater on as well. Pull the car inside and the tint should come off in one piece glue and all.

Gotta be careful not to go ripping the tint off in a big hurry because the defroster strips CAN be stuck to the tint and get pulled right off the glass when the film comes off...trust me lol
