Thinking about buying a DSLR (on a budget)

Man, I just made a jump from my S3-IS to a D60 and it's awesome!!!! I originally wanted to stay with canon, but my photographer buddy talked my into the Nikon and I don't regret it at all!!! I ended up picking it up on ebay though, but for the deal I got, screw the warranty, I saved atleast $350-$400 by picking it up new from ebay. I got the D60 with a 18-55VR, 55-200VR, 4gb SD card and a camera back for $550 shipped. I haven't had a lot of time to use it yet, but I've took about 50 pics with it and it performs flawlessly!!!!!!

That is a very nice deal! I just got the 55-200VR lens and it is just amazing.

There is also talk of the D90(?) coming out in fall.

There are so many people on dpreview forums that are product junkies that have to have the latest and greatest things. Just when I thought we were all bad. They are on a much higher level than us, Pro cameras and lenses are not cheap.

So true, its like detailing. I told myself I was not going to buy more lenses for my Rebel. Just went and bought a 50mm, and a 18-300mm lens.

I'm finding this out as well; high end glass comes with a high end price. I've been looking at the "L" zoom lenses for Canon...I think my kit and 50mm will do for now.

Rick is the one who got me started on this whole camera disease.

I ended up lucking out on a Nikon 55-200VR lense at Ritz camera for very very cheap. They made a mistake with my warranty on my camera and had called me to come in the store. They had forgot to submit it and they said for the frustation, that I could pick out a Nikon zoom lense at half price. Plus I had bonus points on my card from buying and returning so many cameras from them last month that I got an even better deal. They even through in a camera bag and 2 dvd's for free.

I see you already picked a new cam up, but I was going to tell you to check out your local Office Depot. I picked up a Canon Rebel XT there on close-out for $375 about a month ago. If i only knew how to use it, I could get some good shots out here. I'm learning, but haven't had much time to play with it. I'm in the middle of the GOM right now. That tropical storm developed right on top of us last week, it was pretty wild out here. Thats a neighboring Rig in the background. What setting should I have used here?

Without seeing the high res pic I'd say it looks like you were going for a sillouhette with lights on the derrick. Didn't quite achieve that. Mostly because it looks like you used too high an iso, generally you don't want to go over 400 iso even if you're camera can do it, maybe 800 max for small prints. But in low light you'll wash out the colors using high sensitivities (the gray clouds look speckled). So probably 200 ISO, max aperture because you're basically only focusing on infinite. For more dramatic effect I would have manually shifted the white balance slightly redder, the derrick lights wouldn't be affected because they esentially burn in with long exposures but this will give the reds and oranges more depth, too bad you can't polish them to bring out the shine lol.

I figured the ISO should have been lower. Discovered it was high after. The rig was a LONG way off too. Haven't been the happiest with the kit lens that came with the camera. Something better is in order. The sky was changing by the second so I took several shot in several modes quickly. It also didn't help that the rig was swaying because the winds were blowing so hard (no tripod either.) This picture is cropped a ton too. The rig was a long way off, at lease a mile. I'll try to post original file.

Just got the XSi today and shot over 200 pics. Wow, I've been missing out, that's for sure. First I popped on the 50mm 1.8 lens and got some very sharp pics. I'm not sure what to think about the kit lens right now. I wasn't getting all that sharp of shots, many seemed out of focus. It's probably my fault though, I as I was shooting in full manual. Hopefully I can get some decent shots of the 02 vette I'm working on tomorrow.

Although they advertise to be a "authorized Canon dealer" they are known to sell gray market stuff. I'd play it safe and spend $10 more at Amazon.

Just picked up an XSi a couple of weeks ago as well. I am loving it! Going to pick up a couple of lenses soon, one of which will be the f1.8 50mm lens. Shot around 2000 pics already, lol.

Well we all know i'm a canon shooter and I'm heavly invested in it.

The XT i owned was very nice and i still have it.. but it was lacking for me..

I have a 30D for a few monthes.. this is an excellent camera I loved it but ....

I had to have a 1-D Body I waited and found a Mark IIN and i couldn't be hapier..

the one thing I suggest is to put a grip on your rebel it makes it feel much better.

And Glass is a very adictive thing but at least they do lose value too much..

A quick shot with my new Sigma 50mm 1.4 at 1.4
