thickness of clearcoat?

is at a factory job or did u have it painted, the factory basically puts just enough on to get away with it, if your not doing any wetsanding i wouldnt worry about it

2-3 mills is about the thickness of the average factory applied clearcoat. For comparision, that's about the thickness of a plastic bag.

how thick is clearcoat and approx how many times buffing it will it wear away?

Depends what you are buffing with? The more aggressive the product, the more paint removed with each buffing. It doesn't take too many "heavy" buffings to remove/damage the clear-coat with the right product (or wrong product - depending on how you are looking at it)

So how many times can I buff my truck with the factory paint using SSR3 with a Griot's orange pad on a PC?

:dunno So how much beer can I drink before I'm drunk???

Dr_detail said it right!!!!!!!!!!........

SSR3 is a pretty heavy abrasive. Don't use it unless you have to.

If you have scratches that are that deep you may need to repaint. Have a body shop man look at the scratches if they are deep enough that you are thinking about useing a lot of SSR3.

:lmfao :lmfao I love Dr_Details answer:google

I've always wondered about how thick CC is I have been told by a body shop guy that its 3 millimeters. Does not sound that thick but its more than one thinks.

When I look at the swirls in a car I always wonder how deep they are? They are in the microns and the reason they look so deep is the reflectively of the paint and the clear coat. That's why darker colors show they much more than lighter colors.

If you're really serious about the thickness of your paint, Detail Plus sells a paint gauge that is pretty accurate. Although it does not work on fiberglass or plastic, it's a great tool when working on classic/antique vehicles or for up-selling ignorant clients ;)

I have talked to that guy at Detail Plus do you like him, can't remember his name. He tried to sell me an extactor some time back and MAN that guy would not leave me alone, until I told him to BUZZ off!

I haven't spoken to a Detail+ person in years... my local detail supplier carries a plethora of detailing goodies on his truck.

Back to paint thickness -- I also include the following link if one is super-serious about the thickness of the paint on a vehicle... these are hands down, the most impressive gadgets for use in front of big dollar, multi-million $$$ concourse car owners (step up though these are $$$$)

In order to get drunk it will depend on how much you drink during a certain period of time.

The roof on my truck looks like hell, I know it needs repainting I just was looking for a guess about how much I can buff this thing before my paint is gone. I figured I would experiment with it for a while before I get it painted. No one can see it when I'm driving down the road anyways.

Exactly... it depends on my body mass, how well my liver is functioning, what's the alcohol content of the beer I'm drinking, etc.

For paint it's how much is there, the skills of the detailer, and what product they are using, etc.

Hogan, is there anyway you could post a picture of the top of your truck for a better guess of just what we're up against and maybe some suggested solutions?
