They Call it "Velocity Red"!

Rob Tomlin

I've had my Velocity Red RX-8 for nearly 8 weeks now, and decided it was time to post some pics. This paint is pretty cool. When looking at it in direct sun, it has some cool gold flakes in it that really jump out at you. These are somewhat hard to photograph, but I gave it a shot and I think you can see them in a couple of the pics. When the car is in shade, it takes on a different color and look, more dark and reflective.

Current combo: SSR2, AIO and Trade Secret x2.

Much thanks to Anthony Orosco and GSRStilez for recommending Trade Secret Carnauba wax on Red. I highly recommend this wax. Gives the paint a deep wet "glow" that looks fantastic. Combine that with incredible ease of use and great smell, it is a real winner. Simply a pure joy to use.

Here is an overall shot:

Here's a shot of the hood taken from inside the garage that shows depth and reflection:

Here's an outdoor shot showing the paint in a combination of shade and sun. That's me with my yellow PakShak Ultra Fine MF! :D

This pic was taken in direct sunlight, and is about as good as I could get the gold flakes to show up in a picture:

Half shot of car. Again, notice how different the color on the hood looks compared to the side of the car that is in direct sun (although this pic doesn't show the hood all that well):

The last shot just shows the kind of "glow" that you get when the car is in the shade, due in part to the Trade Secret:

That's it for now. This Thanksgiving, I am thankful for products like AIO and Trade Secret, helpful forums such as this..........and 9000 rpm rotary powered vehicles. :xyxthumbs

I love that paint! A great combo of Flakes and Depth to it! My computer guy has the same car in the same color and yours looks sooooo much better than his!

Very  I've seen a few red RX8s but never noticed the gold flake. Really neat effect!

What kind of prep did you use prior to Trade Secret? Your paint looks a mile deep!

I used Pooboyrs SSR2 (even though it was a brand new car, it still had some swirl marks in it  ), AIO (both SSR2 and AIO with a polishing pad on a PC) and finish with TS x 2 by hand.

Nice ride and detail Rob. I just bought a veloity red mazdaspeed mx5 two nights ago and i'm getting ready to detail it this week. my combo will be megs smr 2.0 to remove some very light swirls and topped with s100. Can't wait!!!

Thanks Ranney! I hope you noticed the reflection of one of your yellow Ultra Fine MF's in the third picture!

Awesome detail on an awesome RX-8. I have never seen that color in person, so the next time I'm at the Mazda dealer getting my 6 serviced, I must locate one and check it out. I'm sure it will not sparkle like yours, though ;) Amazing job!

Trade secret looks great over VM also... :)

It is my goto carnauba when I want that little extra depth.

I love the car and you did a great job on it. I have to admit though im not a fan of the metal flake in it though, but I dont care for the look on any car.

I really stuggled with what color to get. I wasn't too sure I liked the Red, because it is a little darker than I tend to like. Also, I normally don't like Red metallics.

But then I saw one that was actually clean on a dealer lot (many of the cars on dealer lots were very dusty/dirty) and this really let the gold flakes shine through. Once I decided to keep an open mind, the gold flakes really grew on me quickly.

They are not "gawdy". You can only see them in direct sunlight, and even then you have to be fairly close.

In hindsight I can't even believe that I considered another color! :)
