The top of SUV's

Sound like I may be in the minority There aren't typically any swirls up there...at least that I can see so I typically will use whatever I am using on the rest of the car on the roof. I figured the roof needs as much or more protection from the elements and birds as the rest of the car.

Can the roof be seen by anybody? The only way I can see my roof is with a ladder. After I polished my SUV the guys at the office asked if I did the roof. They were joking. I guess its no joke. Why would someone do the roof. What's the point. not trying to be rude. I would just like to know why someone would polish the roof of an SUV.

I detail for two reasons 1)looks and 2) protection, I do the roof for protection. While I am up there, I work on the roof rack which adds to the overall appearence.

I always clay, clean/polish and seal the roof. Sometimes the amount of gunk that I remove is almost like skin peeling! Gross!!! You never know what customer is going to look up there and make a judgment of your work because of roof not being done. Seriously. But I must say the swirls are usually not quite as bed up there......thankfully!

My .02!

BTW

I also purchase 2 of the the work platforms and they make the job 100X's easier!

I slipped off a dressed tire of a Lexus GX 470 and grabbed the roof rack to catch myself!

Big mistake! Pulled muscles in my back/shoulder and made it a pain to work for several weeks. Bought the platforms the next day for $30 each on sale at a local hardware outlet and never have to worry again!

Food for thought!

At the risk of sounding like a [jerk] it's just how I do things-to the best of my ability whether anybody else will ever know or not. It's like my painter getting a perfect finish on inner panels that nobody will ever see, or a gunsmith/jeweler/knifemaker polishing parts that are always out of sight...it's a pride of workmanship issue, what some people consider "doing the job right".

*I* see the roof every time I wash, and it's all about me. What *other* people see/think is beside the point. Which also means that if *you* don't care, then it doesn't matter what the rest of us think ;)

I think in this thread here I've seen a difference between a "Detailer" and a "Good Detailer". As far as I've read in this and other forums, if you are a "Good detailer" you treat the roof the same way you treat the rest of the car. I understand when there's circumstances beyond our control(like back pain and such) is understandable. But, if you are healthy, I don't see the need of avoiding a necessary step in car care. Just get a ladder or a step, and go for it. I would do it as same as all the car.

What about as far as cleaning the tops of SUVs, do you guys use any special brushes or anything?

I don't use anything special other than a small step ladder. I do like the platforms mentioned in this thread though...

Same stuff I use on the rest of the body. With the platforms I don't need anything special. If I were doing something like a bus or a motorhome that'd be different though.

If it is a really big SUV, like a Yukon or similar, I will usually clay and wax it. On a normal SUV, like an Explorer or an Envoy, I will clay, use some type of AIO, then just use whatever LSP is going on the rest of the car.

Meguiar's wide versa angle brush, with the telescoping pole from the wash mop. This combination makes it easier to get the roof, w/o having to use the work platform.

thanks Guys for your input.

the Reason im asking. is I think claying and wax is good.

Or should I bring in the big guns(Rotary or PC). I mean you guys are right, You want to do your best all the time. But like one person said, If you ask the customers what they think, then hey please your customers.

kingDavid76- I think you have the right idea- doing your own vehicle(s) is one thing, but doing a customer's vehicle is about giving them what they want (and what they're willing to pay for). If you *want* to go the extra distance that's one thing, but professional situations are, IMO different from private/personal ones.

I suppose there are some pros who'll only do jobs to the standards that *they* consider acceptable, but that's their decision.
