The importance of a good predetail inspection

I just finished my friends '03 Pont. Vibe (Black Met.). Pictures to follow later. When I picked up the car,I immediatally noticed severe scratches (paint removed down to the e-coat) and some damage from minor confrontations to shopping carts and poles. I advised the owner and he agreed to the damage. I proceeded to wash the car. I found the front bumper was loose, rt.frt. lug nut loose and the rt. side of the rear bumper had broken and missing hardware. I contacted the owner to see if it was in a accident. Not being sure because they purchased preowned and the Carfax report was negative.

I worked on the car with no problems buffing out the entire car. I noticed the front bumper was peeling in the obvious areas due to poor prep and found the blend line on the rt. fender, confirming my thoughts that the vehicle was in a accident. When my friend picked up the car, he loved the job. I advised him of my findings. He was going to discuss with the dealer who sold him the car. This process of inspection/customer contact might just be away of saving a frienship. I wanted to cover my butt at the same time keeping the customer/friendship relationship intact.
