The DISO... Dealer Installled Swirl Option. 2 weeks of madness.

I just moved to Jacksonville, FL a couple weeks ago, and have been steadily getting everything in line for my own business down here. However, the money was running thin. I was talking to a buddy of mine, whom is the parts manager for a HUGE dealership here (name removed to protect against slander/libel), and he said he could get me a part-time gig.

I went in, filled out the application, and then showed the GM my facebook page, with all of my "portfolio" of work. They told me I started at 9am the next day.

I got there, and was given a tour of the detailing dept... it was a big bay, big enough for a semi and a trailer, plenty of lights, and a drain in the floor... and let's not forget the floor. 2-3" of standing water at all times, and it was pitch black from dirt. UGH. Washing cars with a beat up WOOL wash mitt, out of a mop bucket with soap in it. Rinsing the cars with a garden hose, and uncharacteristically hard water (most of Jax has really soft water... water spots aren't a problem, except from the rain, except here). Drying them off with a chamois that looks like it's been there for a couple years, and then, using all Car-Brite products... the trauma of my detailing career...

Car-Brite "Wax-as-you-dry"... basically it's like quick detailer/quick wax, except it sucks. I actually got yelled at by the GM for using more than one microfiber per car.

Car-Brite Engine Gloss. It's like a male and female solution in one bottle... 3 sprays on the engine bay, wait 10mins, and the whole thing looks like you've dumped 2gals of engine dressing on it. Wipe off all the excess.

Car-Brite Tire/Interior Shine. Similar to above, except not as "reproductive." Same huge gloss though.

______ aerosol window cleaner (name removed again). Clean the windows, use it as a lubricant with a razor blade to scrape off stickers.

And there's more, that I just don't care enough about to go into detail. Basically, I was there to get cars ready for delivery. When I work on my own business' clients' cars, I'll spend on average 8-12 hours, per car. There, I did 20+ cars in 9-10 hours. If I wanted to get back into that kind of volume work, for junk money, I'd get back into the restaurant industry. I didn't realize it, until a week into it, that I absolutely hated it.

The kicker to all of this... I was working by myself on wednesday last week. I had 3 "lot cars" to do, and all needed to be buffed out, and that was my only workload for the day. I didn't realize that one of the cars I was buffing out, was a car that the DETAIL MANAGER had already buffed out, but never finished. I re-did the whole car, and got the other 2 done. It was BY FAR not my best work, nor was it work I wanted to really put my name on, but they looked a ton better than they did.

I went in on friday, to pick up my paycheck, and they said, "we need to talk." Uh oh. They said, "it's not working out. We need someone that's more 'volume-oriented' and not as 'detail-oriented.'" I said, "correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it the 'detail department'?" They said, "it is, but we need someone who can pump out closer to 30 cars a day... you were struggling to get 20. They looked great, but it's not really what we need. Plus, you made the Detail Mgr look bad when you fixed that car he did." I said, "so, basically, I'm being fired for taking pride in my work, and putting out a good product?" They said, "Essentially, yeah."

ROFL.

Sorry to hear, all they care about are moving units. Glad to hear you made that so call detail manager look bad. Hope things turn out for the better for you.........:waxing:

You know what that is... Horrible customer service. I pride myself on my work as well. It's my name being put on the car I'm working on and I don't want my name to be ridiculed.. It just means that this wasn't meant to be for you. I hope you the best of luck with your location change.

Explains a lot.

Hardly surprising to me after dealing with dealers for as long as I have. I'm actually fixing a vehicle today that was delivered to a customer and she wasn't satisfied with. We're doing a full detail and she went after the dealer to pay for it - it honestly looks like they didn't even clean it aside from the wax caked in every crevice and all over the windshield wipers :angry. The dealership GM called me after he was contacted by the customer and told me that they only wash and vacuum the used cars and do a "spot clean" on the interior unless the customer complains. She ended up getting them to cover around 65% of the cost but I am honestly amazed that a dealer would deliver a vehicle in this kind of condition in the first place.

Hmmm, 30 cars a day X 6 days per week = 720 new car preps per month. I've worked with dealers that did less than that who used 4-6 people to accomplish that. That makes no sense what so ever. Your numbers can't be accurate because (a) it's humanly impossible for someone to that volume day in, day out (b) I don't know of a single dealer in Jax that sells that many.

Man, that sucks!!!

Just another reason to avoid the details from a dealer at all costs. I always find it amazing that you can walk through a dealer showroom and look at the cars covered with swirls. It's like they try to make customers think that is how it is supposed to look.

Sorry you lost the job, but someone like you (who actually cares about his work) deserves better.:angry

I mention this to a potential client during every Pre-Detail Inspection I do. The truth is, customers of those dealerships, and 99% of people in general, DO actually think that's how the car is supposed to look. As long as the paint is clean and shiny, and there's no oxidation, clear coat peeling, etc. it's "detailed". This is why every car wash business is making tons of money and has tons of clients. Yes, there's a number of people who have the knowledge most of the Autopian community shares, but they simply don't care. However most people believe what they're given and that's it.

dude that f****** sucks. all they want is a kid bout my age (16-18) and doesnt give a flyin F*** about detail/halograms. thats whats to be expected in a dealership, i mean unless you are talking about maybe an Audi or Lexus dealer then thats even worse.

I have seen your work, and you are pretty damn good, keep it up bud. ; }

Sounds typical of most dealerships. Their "detail" departments (and i use the term Detail liberally) are there to put a quick shine on the car and make it look presentable for the 35 seconds it takes the new owners to drive it off the lot, at which point they deny all accountability. From what it sounds like, new car prep was nothing more than a spray detail. So yeah, 30 cars is possible in a day. None of them will truly look nice, but they're be done. The dealership i worked at, which was an Audi dealership, hired the 16-21 y/o to pump cars out. They were volume only, not quality. It made me cringe to see a service adviser sell a "High End Detail" at $200 knowing that all they were going to do was vacuum the interior, slap some nasty dressing everywhere, throw a coat of Klasse AIO and ship it out the door. Hardly what i would call a $200 detail job...looked more like a $50 job done by the kid down the street. Sorry you don't have the money coming in, but Good job on standing up for your beliefs and convictions.

UPDATE:

Three of the sales guys have called me, and are "allegedly" (thanks, Jim Rome!) sending me clients soon, all of whom are looking for a qualified detailer, since the current detail dept. SUCKS.

Kinda funny, how everything in life makes a full circle, at some point.
