The Demise of CD-2

I used some of this on the black rubber trim of the Expedition about 6 weeks ago or so. I brushed it on with a small foam paint brush and wiped it off about 10 minutes later with a rag.

Well, it has held up very well and since I just did one side of the truck I can see a big difference. And it was very inexpensive.

Did you use the new formula or the old one? I think the old one is discontinued and you can't find it anywhere except from some leftovers supply from some dealers. I saw some of the old stuff here but never got it. Frow what I understand, the old one is much better than the new one - check carcareonline on their take on this.

Our company policy is not to carry products based upon raw silicone oil as we feel that it is not beneficial long term to rubber/vinyl.</blockquote>

That's from an email from Larry Reynolds, who finally told me what was in the product that they didn't like. It took a few emails to get it out of him...

The old formula didn't have silicone and was actually Larry's favorite. Unfortunately, the company I think went under and their product got bought out. They change the formula now and I heard it had silicones in it. BTW, the old formula were package in a white plastic bottle.

If it has raw silicone oil in it, I don't want it use it. It is the new formula that I have. Trim still looking good at least. I'll stick to 303 and Z12 I guess. I got it from topoftheline.com. Here is what they said about it. Note that no mention of ingredients is made.

BLACK AGAIN IS BACK!! New owners, "New and Improved" formula! We've been waiting for this indispensible product for over a year. A leader in vinyl and rubber restoration for years, Black Again restores faded trim, moldings, rubber seals and bumpers, and removes wax residue on those areas.

Classic car bumpers, and modern vinyl trim come to life. Just apply a thin coat, wait a few minutes, and buff with a towel. If the surface is completely white, apply several coats using this method, and the color will become deaper and deeper with each application.

Here's what carcareonline says on their site:

BLACK AGAIN EXTERIOR TREATMENT

This was our favorite product to restore the jet black patina to bumpers and trim. The company has been sold and the product formula has been radically changed. We will not sell a product containing some of the ingredients in the new formula. We are working hard on finding a replacement. In the meantime, you might try the One Grand Exterior Rubber Treatment or 3M Rubber Treatment.

Also attached the picture of the old formula containers.

Has anyone tried a product from Mother's called Back-to-Black? From what I understand, it's the same type of product. Black Again was not available at Pep Boys, and a guy working there reccomended Mother's Back-to-Black, and I was wondering if any of you have tried it.

Chuck I remember reading about it. I suggest doing a search for it and see what comes up. It was not too long ago either.

I just got off the phone with the CD2 support line (312-649-2708), and the person I spoke to confirmed that CD2 Engine Detailer has been discontinued. This is very disappointing. This is my favorite engine bay dressing. I guess I'll have to run down to AutoZone and see if they have any cans of the stuff left.

What engine bay dressings does PAC sell? I know that Megs' HyperDressing is popular and perhaps that is what I will have to settle on; but are there other engine dressings out there you can recommend?

What? So its getting discontinued again? This is the second time around. I bet its going to be like last time. Discontinue it for a year and then bring it back again. Either way I still have 4 cans left so I'll be good. For a good alternative Megs HD, 303, Stoners trim shine, AG vinyl&rubber all work exceptionally well.

CD-2 began to be hard to find a couple years ago. I stocked up, but when I ran out, I started using Stoner TrimShine.

It's pretty close to the same consistency, and if you buy directly from Stoner, by the case it's only about $3 per can. It's also excellent for any type of rubber or plastic. Stoner = good value!

Saw a few cans at Autozone a week ago. Guess it's time to go clean 'em out. Thanks for the heads up

Al,

You wrote that as though you've compared CD2 of Meg's HD in the past, is that so and if so, was it much better?

Just curious because I use Meg's HD for my engine and have been really happy with the results.

Well, a guy over at MOL just called the Marvel support line and asked them to confirm that CD-2 is being discontinued. He was told that the product has NOT been discontinued; in other words, he was told just the opposite what I was told. My apologies if I passed on incorrect information.
