The Body Shop Blues...

First post...im happy and sad that i have to post. I just couldn't figure it out.

Background: Lexus IS350 black, went to the body shop after an accident. They left rotary swirls all over the car. I used my Dewalt 443 with- Blue LC CCS + PO106, White LC CCS + PO106, White LC CCS + 3M Rubbing compound followed by PO106 again. I've taken it over one door panel about 10 times now, without results. I've adjusted speed (from 1 - 6 on the 443), amount of product used (usually 1.5 pea-drops), and work each 1/2 door panel between 3-6 minutes. I've done about every combo i can think of trying to find the "sweet spot" if you will, or just something to work. Can these combinations just not be able to remove rotary swirls?

Thanks in advance, Josh Brown

P.S.: I'll try to get pictures up this weekend if not sooner.

You should try SIP or some other compound. 106 might not be enough for the holograms you are referring to.

Good luck, I'd definately take it back. They'll probably won't be able to correct it based on what they've already created, but it's worth a try. Hopefully they don't point the finger at you because you tampered with it? Based on how bad it is, they most likely used a wool cutting pad with compound and the same pad/product will need to be used. If a compound/wool pad created the problem(mixed with user error), the same or harsher combo with need to correct it. Especially with new, soft, uncured paint! Because the finish is so new, there's also a possibility that it's not correctable. I hope they guarantee their work?

It was in the body shop in July, so I've had it for a while. I refused it 3 times prior to "accepting" it because of the lackluster abilities of the staff. David, I didn't know that some swirls of a rotary and wool pad could become permanent. Any chance on explaining a little farther to help a newcomer? What about wet sanding with 2500-300- grit? Thanks in advance.

I'm a firm believer that fresh paint shouldn't be sanded or buffed for several weeks/months! It's soft and marrs easily. Next time you see a freshly painted finish, take your fingernail and try to gouge the surface (inconspicuous spot). If you see a mark, imagine what kind of permanant damage sandpaper and/or heavy cut compound is doing to your finish. If that happens, the only way to correct it is to cut down the clear and diminish it's protection.

I inspected a customer's 07 Black(UA-solid black) Expedition that one of our Direct Vendors (DRP) repaired and the customer complained about the paint finish and brought it back. It had some of the deepest swirls I've ever seen from their in-house buffer hacking down their new paint work. They swore up and down they could correct the finish with a little bit of buffing. I watched as the guy did 3 steps to door and fender. It looked decent until I took some 50/50 IA to it. Most of the marks that were hidden came right back and it looked like crap. I then ordered them to repaint it and eat the charges.

i had the same problem with huge holoswirls all over the car. After reading here, settled on the porter cable, orange, green, and black pads and menzerna IP and FPII. just a few passes with each and it was back to showroom.

i should have waited a month, but it was so bad i couldn't stand it and didn't want to take it back to those bozos
