What kind of rotary should G.A. invest in?

You may see PC is less efficiency than rotary buffer for their cutting ability, however, many users still find PC is great for light / final polishing, sealing and waxing. Each tool built has a unique purpose. No one single tool can really fit all sititution.

Most definitely. You'll have to pry my PC from my cold, dead hands. Even with a rotary, I feel I'd want to use the PC the majority of the time still anyways. When I'm able to get results like these from just a PC, I know it's a worthwhile tool.
 
We still have the PE7175 here in the US and it is truly a top of the line tool. I originally wanted one but the price is somewhat prohibitive at $300+ just for the machine. TOL carries it.
 
Guys with the Chicago rotary...



Wat pads would i need and where can I get em from online?



Im aware of the different colored pads around as in those discussed in PC threads. Do these work for the Chicago rotay as well?



Thanks guys..have always been a hand kinda person, but at 25 bucks I can take the plunge..

Absolutely true. In fact, even thought you use a rotary to have the bulk of the work done, the finesse parts is better done with the PC, at least for those of us who are still in the learning curve of the rotary.
 
I've got the 7424 and the Makita. I dont use the Makita unless I have to. Sure, the Makita is lot faster, but if you get too happy with it and make a mistake....then you have to spend extra time to fix your mistakes. Just something to think about.

100% focus is required with high speed rotary buffer.
 
I would rather take the extra focus and safety needed with a rotary (not that I go careless and crazy with my PC) over spending 20 minutes on one panel just to see some results. I would like to harness the full potential of my Menzerna polishes, but I'm just sick and tired of pushing down hard and going extra slow to do the job of a rotary. It's not efficient! I just can't see spending $200-300 on another polisher right now, so the Chicago Electric seems good for me.



Does anyone know anything about the new Chicago Electric Rotary (for $49.99) at Harbor Freight (Eliot Ness linked it)? Does it weight less than the $25 model?

I am also interested about weight. The old one is over 4 kg (8.6 lbs) while the "LCD" model is almost a kg lighter (6.4 lbs). If this one is lighter than the $25 then I am getting one ;)

I know what some of you mean by "you get what you pay for" when it comes to powertools. This is an area that my Dad is an expert in, and doesn't skimp on cost to get something. When he does, it comes back to get him in the ***.



I think I agree with the poll. I'm think gonna go for the Makita. It comes with the backing plate already from Autogeek. Second place in the polls, well, I don't have that much money. ;) :lol



Now my search for pads begins. I'm thinking the 8.5" LC kit from Autogeek for $50.

Keep the PC! It will allow you to do awkward areas where it would be dangerous to take a rotary. Your rotary list does not contain the METABO (www.topoftheline.com, enter "metabo" in the search box). 1/2 the weight of a Makita (or any of the other "big boys"). Swing a Makita for 6 straight hours and you will regret it. I can use the Metabo for 12 hours straight and feel OK afterwards. Keep in mind there is a newer Metabo out now with more power than the original.

Mike- I won't literally be trading in the PC. I'll still have it, and I have plenty of pads to use it for light work. I really just got tired of how slow it is. I'll also lok at the Metabo. The reason I preferred the Makita ot the DeWalt was partly because of the weight. Maybe the Metabo will swing my decision.

Today was step one of letting my parents know what my plans were. Back at Christmas time, they didn't get me the rotary I had wanted because I made them fully aware of house they can damage the paint. I think I scared them a little bit.



Now I guess they've gotten more comfortable with me using the PC to polish. They even refer to it as the "P-C" :D. I dropped a few subtle hints today telling both of them I'm buying a rotary. When Mom asked why, I told her the PC was pissing me off, and it's time to advance.



*Edit- just checked out the link for the Metabo.It does sound good, but I'll have to do some price checking to see if it's worth the extra $90 with the 3 pads and backing plate. Thanks for the link, Axe.
 
It simply boils down to how much you wanna spend. I got a chicago rotary and it does just fine! They even have one for $50 that's exactly like the Makita. But if you wanna spend an extra $150 for the name, go for it.

you mean that bail handle one? Yeah I'm thinking that's the one I'm gonna buy. If for no other reason than it looks more comfortable to use than the $25 one.
