Teenage employee's AARRRGGGG!!!

Detailing NY

New member
I fired 4 people today.

It seems that one of my guys stole a carton of smokes from a car. The driver came to work and found them missing. I have a contact where every sunday I wash around 75 cars.

All 4 are blamming each other, I can not prove who did it, so I fired them all. They are lucky I did not do anything else to them then just fire them. The are all 16yrs old.

I am now hiring again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NYD, that really sucks.... you did the right thing though. Ppl like Jason are truly a rarity. I know how aggravating employees who lack integrity can be.

My wife, who manages a relatively large retail chain of women's apparel once had to fire 15+ employees at once (they were mostly teenagers too). Apparently, the Philadelphia store employees were all systematically stealing clothes...in collaboration with the store manager who begged my wife to not call the police (she's in jail now). My wife got signed confessions from each of the employees and then proceeded to give each one of them the ax.

Color me insane...but I think she kinda enjoyed it.

4 on sundays, they only do car washing, no detailing. They do not know the difference between the wash bucket and the rotary. But they can wash a car pretty good.

3 detailers on saturday, but i mainly do the all the exterior work. These guys do all interior work: stain removal, leather conditioning, dash, carpet, etc.....

During the week i handle each car, once in a while i get some help but i try to do all the work during the week

I dont have to color you insane if you look anything like your avitar.... :p

I honestly doubt these teens learned a lesson.... they dont think its any big deal, "if its there, it must means they want it to get taken..." They'll need to get in a whole load more of trouble for it to sink in just how severe this is.... Actually 16 year olds stealing a pack of smokes, I'd have to call the cops on that one.... might net them atleast one night in juvie - then they'd likely learn something.

Brian.. you have any idea how badly i wanna work for you?? I would give my left arm to be able to detail every weekend... I hate having to be stuck up here in POS Syracuse, so far from NYC...

If you decide to make it NY/Syrcause Perfect Detailing, lemme know.. i'll be your main guy up here.. :D

It's people like that which give us teens a bad name in business.. Right now I'm starting my own business, and it's hard.. Even while i had my detailing business down in PR, people were surprised that when we showed up, we were a bunch of "kids".. but after 6-8 hours of work, they no longer doubted us.. That's why we get followed in malls, and shops, thinking we all shop lift and steal, and we're all bad kids..

We're not.. some of us are really decent, doing the work requiered, and being honest.

Im just glad with this new business, all i make is phone calls, and people can't recognize that im a teen on the phone.. all the personal stuff is handled by adults..

Just my $.02

Hey, if your hiring again. I might be interested. :xyxthumbs

How far are you from the NJ border? From my place to Staten Island is about 30 miles. I might be interested in doing it maybe one day a week like on Saturday. I have been detailing cars on the side for about 3 years now. I have a whole album plus my own car to show off. Its something I really enjoy and I don't consider it work cause my other job sucks and have to cut back before I lose my mind. Drop me an email or PM if you need anyone....

Well, since its this Saturday, we'll talk about it more then. Between class and work, the past few weeks have been real busy for me, so I won't get a chance to call till the weekend lol. So I might as well talk to you about it this weekend since thats when you are having the winterizing session.

I just checked. You are 40 minutes away, which is fine.

If you get a chance later, drop me an email at jrh382@aol.com about the job criteria that you are looking for. Thanks!

See you then!

:nono :p

I imagine that truly is the sucky part of running your own business - trusting the employees. :( This is why teenagers have a bad name and why a place staffed by teenagers (ie, most fast-food places) makes me leery of trusting them...

No difference between a pack of smokes or a Rolex to me - they shouldn't have done it. Geez, I just realized you seem to have been having a lot of trouble with rotten teenagers recently! My sympathies.

Luckily I have never had a problem with theft in 9 years with my employees but high turnover will always be a problem. I might suggest you try a simple employment contract before hiring your next batch of employees and draw up a list of general work rules. Clarify what exactly is expected from the employees before you hire them and put it in writing. Any occurence involving theft should be referred to the cops - zero tolerance. My guys know better because they know I will charge their *** with theft to the maximum extent of the law (not to mention what I would do to them). Spend a little more time when hirining and hopefully everything works out for you.

I was a teenaged detailer for my parents' shop (I just wish I had the knowledge I have now back then) but I was one of the most ethical teens in the world. I would not take anything from anyone's car under any circumstances. If there was something that belonged to them, it would go in the glove compartment or trunk to keep from becoming missing.

Even when driving someone else's car, I was EXTREMELY careful. I would treat the client's cars just like my own or my parents'

I guess it's just the way I was brought up.

4 teenagers! darn Brian, slave labor, hahahaha.

No honor courage or commitment in today's society, well most of them anyway, autopia is a nice place with good people :)

Too bad I gotta leave Nov. 11 for some more training. Got 10 days to read everything on Autopia since August 8, 2002!!!!!

Later Brian,

Jason

Uncle Sam has treated me with firmness, fairness, dignity, and compassion.

I'm pretty sure I can post when I'm out in CA (Hope to see you out there Scott!.)

But for 22 days From November 12-December something I'll be at MCT doing my thing in the field.

Thanks again,

Jason

When I was looking at starting up a detailing buisness I struggle to find anyone that care the same way about detailing that I did.

I figured it just wasnt worth the risk and hassle employing somone who just wanted a job?

I trailed a few people but when I told them not to do this and why, they looked at me like i was some tight a$%se freak.

I remember it was washing the car from the top down, so you dont carry the dirt everywhere !!!

You have more nerves than me mate.

Mylo
