Taping off Edges

Just a quick question. I just got my Makita rotary today and was wondering how many of you guys tape off the edges of panels so you dont accidentally burn through these delicate areas. I have never done this in the past and am curious as to how common the practice is.

Another question. Do any of you do the major correction with the rotary and finish up with the PC? I'm sure it may depend on the job, but any help is appreciated. Thanks. ;)

I tape up the edges and sometimes sharp cornered ridges and such where I think the paint is the thinnest, I then go back and hit these areas with my cyclo or viceversa polishing the edges first with cyclo and then taping and running rotary over the rest of the areas. Tape is much cheaper than costly mishaps.

Taping does three things IMO -- fist saves any doubt of an oops; second saves time not having to come back and detail out all the cracks, vents, and or plastic trim; and third, looks very professional.

I have all sizes from 1/4"-2" with me when I'm doing a buff-out.
