taping black trim

is it better to tape the black trims and the trim around the window up when using the pc ?

I always tape off. It's much easier than trying to clean up the trim after.

Definitely tape it off, it's so much easier when you don't have to be careful not to touch the trim.

gonna be ordering my pc soon. planning to order 2 white lc pads and 2 yellow lc pad and 1 black pad, will this be enough?

If i were you Dex i would order 2 orange pads instead of the yellow. You wont need the yellow much, but the orange i use alot.

Depends on what you're planning to do. I'd get 2 black LC finishing pads. IMO, a good start is to buy 2 of each. You may or may not need all of them, but it's nice to have on hand just in case. If I recall correctly, the first time around I didn't need cutting pads.

It's better to take some time taping up the trim, than deal with removing product from the trim when you're done. Depends on what product you use, but if it leaves you with white chauky residue, it's nice to just pull the tape and disgard it in one shot.

I only tape trim if I'm using a product that I know stains. If I'm using AIO or the like I won't bother and will go straight over it along with the paint (assuring it's clean first of course).

Window rubbers always get taped as although you can use AIO etc on them they leave a nasty black residue on your pads.

What tape do you use Ben? Normal masking tape?

Not seen any off the blue tape the US guys use over here.

It is also important, more so with a rotary than witha PC, to tape painted plastic door handles. The paint on these things is extremely thin. I burned right through it on a car in a split second. Wal-Mart sells 3M masking tape made specifically for cars.

Richt, I did a search for you on 3M's website for United Kingdom. I located the 3M blue tape we use here in the States. You may want to contact them to see where you can purchase it by you. Hope this helps. It's a huge link so lets see if you get connected.

While you're at it, here's their UK Vehicle Appearance page with their products.

I have bought some blue tape from Wickes - 14 day masking tape I think. However, the only time I have tried to use it was after I had applied bumper care to the trim, so it wouldn't stick, lol.

yah i have changed my mind and gonna be ordering the orange pad instead. is it ok to use the black pad to apply zaino with ?

Never applied Zaino with a PC, however, from what I have read the black pad is what you would use. I would definately recommend buying atleast two of the LC black, white, & orange pads. As you may have learned from reading the forums, you always want to use the least agressive approach when problem solving. For example, if you try a light swirl remover and it doesn't yield the results you want, it is nice to have another pad that is ready to go when you step up to a more aggressive one (rather than having to wash it out first). Make sense? You may want to look in a home paint store for the blue tape in the UK. In the states, we can find it pracically anywhere (Home Depot, Lowe's, etc).

Cheers all, for the 3m links, I have a Brown Brothers local, so that could be handy.

Rich I've just been to Brown Brothers and they don't have anything on the system for the 3434 tape that I was going to get and only had 471 in stock in 6mm wide. Have got 5 rolls of the 19mm on order that I'll collect next week - if you get any problems I can always bung one in the post.
