Taping areas off, what type of tape do you use?

Title says it all I guess. Just curious if some have specialty tapes or perhaps a bad experience with taping trim off etc. I did a search but did not find the answer to this question.

Thanks,

Mike

Yeah, get the real 3M stuff. I used a generic blue tape from Lowes and it *really* stuck! I had to use a lot of 3M Adhesive Remover to get it and its residue off, huge mess, big job. The more expensive 3M tape is money well spent.

I used to use the tan masking tape (read only from a autobody supplier) but now have switched over to using the Green Tape from 3M.

I but both of different sizes available

I use the neon green 3M tape. Just sticky enough to stay on through the polishing steps, yet easy to remove with no residue. Great stuff.

A painter recently gave me a tip. He applies the tape to his skin (arm, around his waist, etc..) to remove the excess glue before laying it down on the paint. When you remove it, you don't have any glue residue to deal with, and you won't risk damaging a painted pin stripe in case there is a 'weak' spot in the paint.

Anyone know a good place to buy the 3M tape in bulk? I go through a lot of rolls between tracking, autox, and detailing.

I get it at my local PBE store. They always have plenty in stock. I'm not aware of any place online to buy in large quantities. Maybe try Googling it?

for genuine 3M Painter's tape. It saved me about 50-70 dollars when I bought them from eBay when I painted my house!

eBay is actually pretty good for some items.

yes, the generic beige masking tape will often leave sticky residue behind. expecially if the tape is a little older. this once happened to me and the time i spent on clean up was tremendous.

Don't put it on any paint that has had touch-up applied to it. Rips the touch-up off without question. I used touch-up paint from Nissan to paint a plug that I put where my rear windshield wiper was. Taped it off once and RIP... took it right off.
