Tape protection?

Hey everyone,
Does anyone know what is a safe tape I can use to protect things like trim and headlights on my car while I polish it and wax it etc. I dont want to get wax or anything on the windows/trim/lights cause it will prob damage stuff. Someone told me I can use 3M blue painters tape or something like that.

Does anyone put tape on stuff to protect it?
What is a good trim dressing?
If I get wax or polish or something on my trim or headlights,.........what should I do?

Thanks for responses/recommendations etc.

Steve

3m blue painters tape. leaves no residue and goes on and off with easy. go to home depot to get good deals with optional sizes...

cover all plastics. as for headlights makes sure whatever u're applying is applied thin, that way when u go over the edges nothing gets too far into cracks.

Thanks joyriide1113,.........I will pick some up tomorrow so I can get to work when my stuff arrives this week.

I use 3M masking tape from my local auto parts store. On cheap plastic-chrome and freshly painted surfaces I use painters tape.

When in the paint department at our Wal*Mart recently, I noticed several varieties of masking tape.
They were rated by hours of use. I don't remember the hours, but it seems like it ranged from just a couple of hours to all day stuff.
I'll try to check the next time I'm at WallyWorld.

Ya, I want to have tape on my trim and stuff,...........Im waiting for my 4* stuff to arrive,....and thats not supposed to be too kind to your trim I have been told. So I plan to cover up my trim and stuff. I hope someone answered my question in the trim/molding section,..........better go check.

The ratings are for how many days you can leave it on a surface and still pull it off cleanly. They're almost directly proportionate to the grippiness of the tape. I prefer using the green painters tape because it will stick to anything (old rubber trim for instance) and I could (if I felt like it) leave it on there for 4 days (I think that's the rating) and not have to clean it off the trim when I was done. Home Depot has a bunch of kinds, read the packages and see what fits your needs.

BTW, Blue tape has a rating of 2 or 3 weeks, for comparison

Anyone know where to get the best deal on the 3M Blue Painters Tape? I
just bout a roll and it was like 5 bucks for 1 roll. I thought maybe someone
else might know where to get it cheaper.

Depending on the size, that's about right. I also paint houses and business when I'm not detailing. If I had to use that stuff, I wouldn't make any money. They have definitely branded that product, but there are others that work just as well. When I have to use tape, I just use some off brand painters tape that Home Depot sells.
