Taking on harsh water spots...

Clean Dean

Keep it clean !!!
Here is an example of some very harsh water spots I encountered on a factory sunroof of a 1997 Mercedes Benz E300 TD. I tried a new approach to removing the spots, and it proved quite effective.

The spots were about 95% + removed in about 5 minutes. Sorry pics were not clearer, the weather was very overcast.

I used 00 steel wool with Flitz Polish. Yes, Flitz is commonly known as a metal polish but states that it is effective on all non-porous surfaces. Worked well in this instance and extremely fast !!!

Dean, does the steel wool leave any noticable marring on the window or does the flitz remove it? Thanks

Greg

Gregcavi,
In this instance I noticed no signs of marring/scratches on the glass. The vehicle is stored in a warehouse with extremely harsh lighting, and I still did not see any marring/scratches.

Thanks for the tip. Would this work on a windshield? Also, would #0000 be a better choice for the steel wool?

Eric

#000 wool seems a bit abrasive to me on any glass surface. I usually try something like pro polish or wheel cleaner (spray and rinse works very well).

Wouldn't a chemical cleaner be the safer option on a glass surface?

I have the OLD school version of the Flitz in an orange tube, is that the same formula? Seems like a good abrasive yet safe polish that will give bite unlike other polishes that clean/protect for metal.

Cool Work!

I've used steel wool as well on water spots with great luck...Recently I stopped in at my local janitorial supply house and asked about hard water spot removers that are auto safe. I got a product made by Sunnyside Products, Fresno CA its called Sunny Brite II and is about the best that I have ever used. it seems to dissolve the spots right before your eyes. I have been doing this at the wash stage. I could not find it on line anywhere so if you have a janitorial supply house locally I would call and see if they have it...........Again its auto safe and is printed right on the bottle.
