Taking delivery of new Porsche 997 S (black)

I am in the process of selling my Silver E55 AMG and getting a black 997 S. I have learned a lot here (actually haven't been here in a while) and did, I think, a pretty good job taking care of my E55. All the right stuff, and MF towels from all the "best" sources.



The Porsche (as was the Benz) will not be a daily driver but more a garage queen. Hence, the thinking that I can handle the black. I hope i'm right! LOL.



Anyway, I've instructed the dealer I want the car delivered with all the white sticky stuff on the car. Figured if anyone's going to swirl the paint, it should be me! I'm sure it's here somewhere (I apologize) but what's the best way to remove this stuff. I'll then wash, clay and wax. Any reason to polish?



BTW, I still have time to take a silver car instead if I chicken out :chuckle:

Inspect the paint and judge for yourself if there's a need to polish. I'm pretty sure there is. Clay first, too. :D



Can't you wait for the Turbo? :D

I thought of keeping the E55 and going on the list for the TT. I can still do that and use this car as a bridge to the TT. We'll see. My wife is ready to kill me for getting rid of the Benz.



Thanks for the reassurance with black. I just started to have an anxiety attack and thought about changing. Was on some of the Porsche boards looking at pics, and there are some beautiful black cars!



Any idea how to get all the sticky goop off the car? Is it just peel off?
 
You must have gigantic balls. I would never ever take delivery of a car without a total walk around inspection of it. By white stuff do you mean the white plastic used to protect during transport? The plastic wrap is good for protecting against damage, but it is equally as good at hiding it. Serious gamble. If you are into that sort of thing, it will be great. Will your car be mint under the plastic? or will it have damage I could see telling the dealer to forgo the detailing.



Black is the color.
 
I use to be a service technician at a Mercedes dealership and the white protective tape comes off pretty easily. All you have to do is peel up on a corner and it should come off in one piece for each panel. It may leave a slight residue on some of the edges, but nothing that shouldn't come off with a simple wash. If it doesn't come off after a wash, I personally would recommend a product called "sticker off". I purchased some of this at a Yamaha motorcycle dealer and it works wonders on sticker residue.



I see no reason to clay and polish a brand new car. You may want to hold off on the wax too for a few weeks just in case the paint needs time to cure.

If he would be worried about hidden damage after taking delivery (very highly unlikely), then the simple solution would be remove the protective tape while the salesman is present.
 
Porsche and Silver is mandatory!!! .......(preferably with red interior and GT3 seats)



but seriously, get the silver. I think the resale of silver is much easier. All of the paint imperfections are way more visible on Black, those darn rock chips on the front of the car. :cry: Very hard to track or Autocross a black car without being uptight.



p.s. seal gray with savanah beige is very nice. I saw one recently :soscared:

Get the Black !!!!!!!!! everybody must experience a Black car once !!! the best color ever when cared for correctly.
 
I agree every one should have a black car once. And most of them usually say "NEVER AGAIN!"

actually I won't ever buy a car with Black interior again either! :woot:



its also widely known that Silver adds 15 H.P. to your quarter mile. (black paint is heavier, believe me no need to look it up).



I don't think I could choose between the following if you paid me



1. Seal Grey/ Savanah Beige

2. Arctic Silver/ Cocoa Brown

3. Artic Silver/Boxster red

4. Seal Grey/Boxser Red

5. Seal Grey/Metropol Blue
 
do not get black



It is obviously your money, but if you are not anal enough waterspots will show up sooner than later for one. It takes 1 rock to damage the car, so it doesn't have to be a daily driver. And of course while washing it, you will most likely create cobwebs. If you do, you can always hire one of us to get it right :D



Get silver.



You will be sorry if you don't.



PS: Do you want a new black car? buy a kia in black and practice on that - heck you can afford an extra 10Gs can't you?

No stay with Black, your getting the best maybe the second best car in the world, and it needs to be black or dark blue, but most of all enjoy it.
 
You can wax it as soon as you take delivery of the thing. I mean it takes like 2 months to get here. That should be more than enough time for the paint to cure.
 
Get the black. I had a BMW 530 Sapphire Black Metallic. Yeah black's the hardest color to keep clean (which only lasts for 2 to 3 days), but it is managable. The trouble with black is that it absorbs light so any imperfection is more visible to our eyes.

My current car is silver.

Enjoy whatever color you get!

Don't forget guards red, I love this color. Anyway, since you're taking delivery with the plastic still on the outside and inside, I would recommend:



A light clay (ClayMagic)

3M PI III Machine Glaze with a polishing pad

Wax of your choice



I know there's alot of boutique and high end stuff and every other product under the sun here, but the routine I just gave you will give you superb results...good luck!
 
Really you can't go wrong with silver, black, red, gray, or dark blue. A 911S will look good in any of those colors. I personally would get the silver because it's so easy to care for, and with sealants like UPP and Zaino, silver can look wonderful.
 
I should have been a little more specific. Yes, the chances are small that there is any damage under the film. It's still a risk. Car dealers are your best friend, until something is wrong. If by chance he took delivery of the car, then found damage, the dealer may or may not accept responsibility. It would be up to them.
 
Sounds like you have a tough decision on your hands! I'm not going to tell you what color you should buy, but I would recommend you install some 3M protection for the front nose and rear 1/4 panels of you choose black. Like a few others said, stone chips are very noticeable on black cars more than any other color. I guess it wouldn't hurt on silver either.



I used to do all of the new car preps for the Porsche/Audi dealer in my area. The easiest way to remove the plastic is to let it sit out in the sun long enough to get warm and then begin peeling from the corners. It should come right off. I would use a mild tar/adhesive remover to get the excess glue remaining on the paint from the plastic. If the paint does need claying, you will probably need to do some light buffing. I wouldn't worry about waiting to wax it. Paint should be cured well enough.

Yes the 3M film is great. I have it on my Silver bumper and its cut down the chipping remarkably well. It won't protect agains bumper to bumper contact (like when you park on the street) but the little bottle of silver touch up paint has been 86'd.

When I had my black car I considered making a little cup holder for it I used it it so much.
