Tailgate Repair (NXT et al)....

I picked up a 2001 Black Lariat Supercrew yesterday (yes...black...how stupid am I) with only 37000kms.

The woman who had the truck before me babied it but never had it detailed (thank God).

At one point in time she closed the garage door on the poor tailgate and scraped it up.

Most couldn't be felt with a fingernail.

Ford clearcoats are very thin. I broke through it on my previous F150 trying to repair a scratch so I know to be careful.

If I could just make it less noticeable I would be happy.

I used the following with the PC

DACP

Hand Polish

3M IHG

NXT (yes..finally in Calgary)

This took a couple of hours so the rest of the truck will have to wait until later:

Here are the pics

You can still see some of the scratch but I am afraid to try and remove them further....maybe I'll save that for later.

If I can feel the rest wilth my fingernail do you think I should just leave it alone?

If you can feel it with your fingernail, you'll have to use touchup and wetsand. Compounding will just abrade the clear to nothing.

Great job though! :xyxthumbs

Thanks for the positive feedback guys.

I couldn't imagine trying to do that by hand.

It was Rubbing Compound that got me into trouble on a small spot on the other truck.

If I get the urge to do better I am going to bring it to a professional. It is an older truck so it will probably see a few more scrapes.

I just need to work on the smoke smell and the rest of the exterior......oh....and the Harley Davidson bumper sticker on the slider.:nono

Why no love for Harley? It is a Ford, after all...Harley's partner in crime, these days.

Man, you're going to have a heck of a time with the smoke smell. :( My brother and I worked on this ex-smoker's car for my sister for two weeks before we finally got all the smell out. It was wash/rinse/dry, wash/rinse/dry, the whole interior about 10 times.

You might be better off taking that to a pro with a proper high power extractor and an ozone machine. That should kill the smoke smell.

Yea...I am seriously considering aking it to a professional for that.

I will give it a shot on my own first though.

Oh...and ....tell me the truth.

Does this tailgate make me look fat?:D

Harleys are OK but not for me.

They were great people to get the truck from but I am going to yank the sticker tomorrow.

If they see the truck on the street ...I will just tell them it "blew off".

They said they couldn't afford the Harley version when it came out and that this one was expensive enough.

Great work. I'd live with the "remaining" imperfections to save the clear. You really did a great job; I had to actually really look to pick out what I think are the remaining "scratches". I think going at it too much more for that final 5% could compromise your clear, and then a repaint would be needed.

NXT makes me look "bloated", so don't feel bad.... But it does make my Arctic Pearl White shimmer like it's alive!

Great work on your wife's truck buddy. The NXT looks amazing. Did you top it with anything? How are you planning to attack the sticker? You will have to change your signature now.;)

Deemo,

Here in Omaha, I can rent an ozone generator from a janitorial supply store for $25/day. I don't know if there's anyplace to rent one from in Calgary, or if the cost would be prohibitive compared to having a pro tackle the job, but it might worth be looking into.

Not topping with S100 yet. That will be in a week or two.

The sticker is GONZO!

I used Goo Gone, a hairdryer, and best of all....a light switch plate I found while looking for an implement in the garage that was softer than glass but with a good edge. Worked like a charm!
