synthetic oil at 103k

i have seen other studies where they rank oils and its funny to see how the ranks change depending on who is sponsoring the independant study....

i dont even hesitate to buy mobil1, its good, done deal etc. i only thought is the weight that i buy and thats the most thinking about the subject i do, along with a K&N oil filter....vola happy

One thing to consider... Mobil 1 is readily available in many places, but I have been told by several mechanics that it is not compatible with dino oil. If you happen to be in need of oil somewhere without Mobil 1, you're basically hosed. Mixing dino and Mobil 1 has caused some nightmares, the worst of which was valvetrain failure. That is one reason I switched to Amsoil about 6 years ago and have been very happy with it. :xyxthumbs (I should note that I am basing this on the Mobil 1 available at the time, the newer stuff may be different.)

My hatch had 140,000 miles when I bought it. It burned some oil too. I used that high milega oil...Valvoline or Quaker State I forget and it worked really good.

wait a sec.. so to switch to syn from dino, would you have to do anything out of the ordinary from a regular oil change where you just fill up with syn? You make it sound like there'd be a problem with the residual dino oil mixed in with the syn?

there shouldn't be a problem if you're doing a full oil change, but if you topped off 2 or 3 quarts of Mobil 1 with 2 or 3 or dino you could have issues. Other synthetics don't have this problem. Some oil companies will recommend using an "engine flush" type of product to clean out residual oils, but it's usually not necessary.

Main reason some (AMSOIL) suggest using an engine flush is to clean out some of the crud in the engine before changing to synthetic. Synthetic cleans an engine so when you first change you would need to change the synthetic sooner because it will get a lot of crud from cleaning. The flush is cheap and really helps get the junk out beforwe you switch. Did it on my Grand Prix at 66,500 (a year ago) and no problems what so ever. And yes I also sell AMSOIL but think this is true for most synthetics.
