Swirl Removing Question

I was trying to remove some swirl marks on my car with PB SR 2.5 using the PC 7424 and Sonus polishing pad. I started out with the speed set at 4.5 and worked the product till it was dry, and I didn't see any difference so I applied more PB and stepped up the speed to 6 and worked it in, again till it was dry.

My question is when I went to wiped the product off, I noticed some paint on the cloth, is this normal ?

I did notice some small improvement, but not what I hopped for. It also left dry powder all over my car.
Am I doing something wrong ?
Did I work the product to long ?
Do I work the 2.5 till all the swirls are gone and follow it up with SR1 or do I work it to a certain point and then follow it with SR1 ?

The car I'm working on is a 3 month old Mustang GT with Sonic Blue Paint.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I would like to remove as much of the swirls as possible and fill in what I cant remove ?

Can someone also tell me how SR2.5 compares to Meg #9 ?

If the car has clearcoat, you may have a problem, that could mean that you've gone through the clear and are down to the base coat. In a clear coat paint job, the color doesn't have a whole lot of UV protection, so you might want to check on that.

I would have been using a cutting pad with the 2.5 to take a small layer of clear down. You seem to be working the SSR the right way and the fact that you could see paint on the rag puzzles me. Your car should be clear coated.
I would also follow up the 2.5 with the SSR1 the 2.5 will leave a haze or powder look on the car its a cutting agent. I would use a polishing pad with the SSR1 then do the rest the steps that you do.

The car does have a clear coat base coat. It wasnt much that came off, but there was some.

Im wondering if I may have applied to much preasure when working the product ?

I have heard that the color on base coat is actualy drawn up to the clear so if you remove any clear you may have some color on the cloth, just what Ive read somewhere, Im not sure how true that is.

Thats why Im asking the Pro's here

here is my intake on it since I use ssr2.5 on every detail I do. My guess is the pad - I use Lake County polishing pads with the SSR 2.5. I tried another brand's polishing pad and it didn't do anything, no matter what I did. In another word, it had no cutting ability. The LC polishing pad does. In fact I can go straight to a sealant or wax. No hazyness from the 2.5. It leaves the paint wet and glossy. Hope this helps. Get some LC or Meguiar's pads. Keep us updated.

you should never see any color when a car is clearcoated:eek

I don't think you could have possible gone through the clearcoat, was there any touch up paint on the car? this sounds strange.... 3 month old cars don't give off color...check the edges of the panel that the paint came off of very carefully and see if they are super smooth...I'm suspecting dealer or factory repaint and not done right. :angry
call me :phone: if you don't understand what you are looking for and I can probably explain it better than typing.

OK, Maybe I've brought this on myself. The color problem does concern me, more so now. But I'm trying to understand if my application and use of SR's in general are correct. From what I understand so far is, I should maybe try a cutting pad, and switch to the LC pads.
Just to clarify something, when I used the SR2.5 it did not create any hazing or do any damage that I could see by my eyes. The finish was still glossy. The powder that I am referring to was the dried product being thrown all over the car.

I don't think the car has been repainted, but then again who knows what goes on with our cars prior to purchasing them.

Poorboy how do I contact you, where can I obtain your number ?

Sealman - let Steve help you with the paint issue. go to www.poorboysworld.com and call the toll free #.

Now - I really doubt that you would need a LC cutting pad on a 3 months old car with the 2.5. Their white polishing pad will give you the result you need. However, sometimes you have to go real slow and do more then 1 pass. Depending on how hard the CC is. Otherwise you are doing it correctly.

I am wondering why you are using SSR 2.5 on a 3 month old car. If the car is that new why not use something less agressive? Is it 3 month old to you or is it a brand new car that is only 3 months old? SSR 2.5 is a relatively aggressive polish, so why use it on a new car? :dunno I also agree with Poorboy's in the fact that you shouldn't see the color coming up. That's something I usually see with oxidized paint or single stage paint.

Thanks tdekany, do you think that I need to switch the brand of pad I am using ?

I believe so - SSR 2.5 is an excellent swirl remover with the LC white polishing pad. If you don't get any improvement with the sonus pad, then I'd say it is the pad - just use it for polishing instead and not for removing defects.

Its a brand new car. It has swirls from when the dealer detailed the car. The SSR 1 was not aggressive enough so I went to SSR 2.5 .

Just a little update on this situation. It seems that I may have mistaken the product for my paint. :beat The product on a white cloth looks very similar to my paint. I used the SSR 2.5 today with a little more aggressive pad and the results so far have been great.
I was only able to use the 2.5 today before I ran out of light, so I will follow up with SSR 1 tomorrow.
Thanks Steve for the help. I think you will be happy to know that after inspecting the car closely, I saw no evidence of a repaint or any type of Touch up. You should see the results I'm getting. I would have to say at this point that about 85 to 90% of the swirls are gone. I imagine after SSR 1 it will look fantastic.
A little patience and a little confidence go a long way, Thanks again Steve and the Poorboys product.
