Swirl Removal Products?

If I use my new PC to remove the swirls from a black Volvo using the following products:

meguiars #9 SMR 2.0

3m finesse-it II finishing compound

3m Perfect-It II fine cut rubbing compound



Followed by Blackfire, Blitz or Zaino ( I own all 3 and haven't decide yet)

Do I still need to use 3M SMR and IHG somewhere in this system?

I have to put my order for the above in today and want to get it all at once.Thanks
 
The PI-II FCRC isn't really made for swirls. That would maily be used for light to moderate scratches. This product would be way too agrassive for just swirls. To attack the swirls, i would order the FI-II, for heavier swirls, and either the 3M SMR or Meguiars 2.0, for the lighter swirls. Both of the SMR products are very similar, so it would almost be a waste to order both. 3M IHG is a glaze, which contains oils that fill in swirls and leaves the finish looking better than it actaully is. If you would like to use it, you can, but only before waxing with a CARNUBA. If you are going to use Zaino or Blackfire, you can't use the IHG because it will affect the bonding of these sealants to your paint.
 
It looks like your product list is pretty complete. You certainly don't need the IHG if you're going to use Zaino or BF, but it could be used under your Blitz I guess.



I haven't tried the #9 2.0, but it seems to be reasonably equivalent to SMR (maybe a slight bit less harsh). I guess if cost is no issue I would just get it :cool:. If it is, skip it.



Don't forget to Dawn wash for Zaino after using FI-II, PI-II, or #9 2.0 to remove any possible oils (I don't think FI-II or PI-II have many fillers or oils). The BF polish should take care of anything left on the surface if you decide to go that route. Then you can start layering on the AFPP.

I've used Meguiar's #9 and 3m SMR. Personally I like Meguiar's #9 but I think I'll give 3m SMR a try the next time I polish a car. The last time I used 3m SMR it left a lot of oily residue (fillers) behind and they were a paint to buff off to see if you removed the swirls. Meguiar's #9 contains fillers but they don't smear all over your paint as easily.
 
I enjoy #9. Its the same price at PepBoys here in Utah. Like 9 bucks a bottle for either SMR or #9. If that's the case then I'd go for the #9. :up
 
another vote for #9 2.0...



after my battle with SMR, and experiencing the ease of use (on and off) with #9 2.0, there's no doubt in my mind which is the more efficient one to use relative to the time and energy put in.



smr is good, just takes a lot longer to break down and is a pain to buff off.

For my customers I use 3M SMR for light colored cars and for dark colored cars. I find that the consistancy of the product is thicker then that of the Meguiar's #9. Thus when doing a side panel it stays put until I spread it out. I also find that it is not as dusty nor does it become hard to remove after burnishing the surface of the panel like Meguiar's does.



For more aggressive issues on the paint I've switched from Perfect-IT II to 3M Perfect-IT III and the results are really nice. Again the Perfect-IT III is less dusty, thicker (stays put on vertical panels) and really comes up to a nice gloss.



Being close friends with the owner of a twelve store auto body supply chain, I can pick and choose from a mega selection of body-work products. I always go back to 3M for my business detailing needs.
 
thecarguyGP97 said that you should only use 3M IHG before using a carnuba wax. I called Blackfire tech support and asked them and they said the Blackfire polish would bond perfectly well over the3M IHG. I haven't tried it yet but plan the next time I detail my car.
 
I'm extremely interested in your results because IHG is not recommended under Klasse. If it works with BF, I may try it.

I just purchsed Blackfire for use this fall and the technical support said that it would work correctly with using Perfect-IT Foam Polishing Pad Glaze and Swirl Remover and then Blackfire.



Probably some of the key to this is that Blackfire does use some Carnauba.
