Surprised by Zymol...

Well, I bought my used 2001.5 Passat from an obsessed owner that maintained the car very well. This was October 2004.

He would clean and wax the car every 6 months with Zymol cleaner and carbon wax.

Well, just this week, when it rained, the water still beads up!

I thought Zymol was a carnuba wax which was weaker and didn't last as long?

Granted, my car is parked in a public garage type place but it is really dusty and has gone through a winter of snowboarding trips...

I do plan on getting the car detailed soon by GSRstilez from Autopia...

You'd better base the longevity claim on your own experiences. I've never seen it survive more than 4 - 6 weeks. That doesn't make it a bad product, you just have to have adequate time for frequent re-waxing should this become your preferred product :xyxthumbs

Are you sure the previous owner just used Zymol and not something else as well? My experience with Zymol was with their wax made especially for Saab paint  AFAIK this is just a slight reformulization of Carbon (if that!) and there was NO WAY it would last 2 months let alone 10!!!

Its amazing how those that don't know the characteristics of an authentic Zymol will be quick to judge and call it weak and such. Zymol will hold up very well to the elements when its applied and layered correctly. But..............nothing will quite match a freshly applied and cured Zymol shine IMO (not withstanding the prep argument and such).

Good going with your wax. Believe me, you haven't seen anything yet!

I'm pretty sure all he used was Zymol Cleanse and Zymol Carbon Wax, cuz that's what he said he used.

He washed and waxed it the day before I picked it up October 16, 2004.

Now, when I run my hand over the paint, it does feel rough and it needs to be claybarred.

But the water definitely beads up all over the car. And after washing, the car still looks new. It probably doesn't have that "deep" look that all you guys/gals look for, but I'm just impressed that it beads up water.

Doesn't that mean there is still some kind of protection?

water beading is NOT a definitive sign of protection or "wax" actually being on the paint surface- some paint will bead without any "wax" being present

But if the paint beaded water after the wax was applied, and it no longer beads, then it needs another application.

If the paint beaded water after the wax was applied, and the owner isnt applying a QD with magic beading goo in it, and it is still beading, i would have to say there is still wax on the surface.

yes, smooth paint can bead water- I highly doubt that the Zymol is still present-its possible that the owner did a combo of a synthetic base product topped with Zymol.

It doesn't have to bead and not have adequate wax protection. Outside cars that are exposed to a lot of airborne particles sometimes will not bead after a couple of hard rainstorms, regardless of the amount and freshness of wax on top of the surface (I had a black car that would do that notoriously).

When I cleaned up that car from the dirt and dust, it would bead up furiously as it did on the first day of the wax.

However, my current daily driver has no problem with beading, dirty or clean...go figure.

Felt the above could bear repeating. I get so tired of seeing Zymol kicked about by those who've no idea what they're talking about.

Carbon will typically last at least as long as you have experienced. However, if you want a Zymol which will wear like iron and have a shine second to none.....try their Titanium. It's a bit of an effort to apply. But....when you do it properly....it will easily rival Souveran and last many times longer.
