Surbuf Pads... My new best friend!

The black 164L is my girlfriend Shannon's car, and the black 164S was mine until I sold it last month. Hers is a 1991 with 120k miles, and mine was a 1993 with 69k miles. I also have a 1989 Milano that I have turned into a dedicated roadracing project (as you can see in the pics)

I still live in Poway. I graduated from Poway High School in 2000. I didn't know that there was anyone else with an Alfa at PHS! I don't think I've seen you around... what color is your car?

My car is Metallic Black. I do live in Poway, graduated from PHS just this past year. I live near Otto, believe you know him. I just remember seeing 2 other 164's in Poway: a dark green and a black. Rare cars around here :(. Can't wait til they start importing them again!:up

You know Otto?!? Does he still have the red CRX? I can't believe you had an Alfa at PHS and I never met you!

I can't wait until Alfa starts importing cars to the US again... as soon as that happens I will be selling my WRX and buying a new Alfa! :D I love the look of the new 156... and I can't wait to see pictures of what the new US models will look like! The concept drawings of the new Spider look pretty awesome... I can't wait ;)

Check your PM's for the answers to the other questions.

Personally, I've gained a recent appreciation for hatchbacks and prefer the look of the 147:

I LOVE the look of the new 147! They need to bring the 147 GTA to the US! ;) That car would make a great hot hatch. Take a look at the concept scetches of the new US Spider in this month's Road&Track... it kinda has the front grill treatment of the 147, but with different headlights, etc. Maybe I'll scan the picture and post it tomorrow.

Hey Chip,

Are you planning to go to the AROSC time trial at Willow Springs in Jan? What about the driving school in Feb?

I am planning on the Jan driving school, but am not sure about Feb.

What about you Puterbum? Any plans to track your car?

Dom

1991 Alfa 164S

P.S. And while we are on the subject of showing off our babes, here's one with the wife and daughter (sorry, no car in the photo). My daughter will be a future Formula1 driver in about 17 more years :)

Dom,

Well... in a perfect world, I would be driving at the January 12&13th time trial at Willow Springs, and Shannon would be driving at the Feb driving school. However, after the last driving school, the Milano needs a new radiator, a new wheel, and two new tires (due to a little off track excursion).

Plus, Shan & I are going snowboarding the weekend after the time trial... so it's all going to depend on whether I can come up with the ca$h to go snowboarding, fix the Milano, AND go time trialing. :D Normally I would just skip it, but there isn't another TT with the club for months and months :(

I NEED to get out on the big track at Willow... I went up there and hung out with all the SoCal guys at the last TT and that track looks like soooooo much fun!

Keeping my fingers crossed... maybe I'll just put a 5-point harness in my WRX and take it up there

BTW, your wife and daughter are beatutiful :)

I don't know about you guys but I'm a MAN first. I don't mind those girls touching my just detailed car at all. And no, I'm not thinking, "Hey you girls really shouldn't touch the car." No way! Perhaps if they were sitting on it, then the true Autopian in me would say, "Hey, you hotties need to get off the car right now." Hehe! That's where I'll draw the line. Laters

As most of you know, I detail and polish a lot of late model Corvettes, which have incredibly hard clear-coat. So hard, in fact, that M105/Orange pad with a PC, speed 6, heavy pressure, takes forever to correct!

Welcome my new best friend!

For the first time today, I tried out the "Surbuf" pads, which are foam pads, with short-knap fibers attached, that have some excellent cutting ability.

(Sorry, no pics of my process....:toetap05:)

I had a customer today, who had a 2001 Torch Red Corvette, with some heavy scratches on the rear deck lid, where some object had been dragged across it. Needed to be wet-sanded.

After wet-sanding, I was dreading the process of polishing because I know how stubborn that clearcoat can be!

Then I remembered the Surbuf. I also remembered someone saying that Surbufs require little or no pressure (what a blessing on a 90 degree day with 90% humidity!)

Working in the shade, I loaded up the Surbuf with M105, primed it in thoroughly, and set out to polish out the sanding marks......

Within 5 minutes, very light pressure, sanding marks completely gone!

2 more minutes with a white pad/M105, I was done!:Dancing Dot:

I used a Griots polisher speed 6.

Excellent success, I can't wait to use them again! (pics next time, I promise! This was a mobile job and I forgot my camera..... :banghead:

I'm with you on this one Bill. I tried them out earlier this week on a detail, and couldn't believe how much faster they cut then the H2O Cayan pad. I was doing a detail and only had the cayan pad to work with and halfway through, the FedEx truck arrived with my Surbuf pads. I immediately switched pads and was amazed at how good these pads worked.

I give them

Super pads, but the down side is that they don't last like a foam pad.

Surbuff Pads

Ok Bill, are you telling me that there is something better than Cyan/Tangerine on a Flex!! I thought these were the last pads I would ever have to buy!! Are you finding that 105 may be to aggresive and 205 might be better with surbuff's? Anybody out there using Surbuff's on a Flex that can give me there opinion on the combination?

I can't really compare them to Surbuf, as I haven't used the Cyan/Tang.

Well... this was my maiden voyage with Surbuf and I only used them with M105. I'll report back on this as I use them more and let you know my findings.

They work great with the flex but do leave marring so its def not a one step.I used SIP and followed with 106ff on a white pad and it came out sweet.

Since the Surbuf pads require very little pressure to do their job, is there any benefit in using them on a Flex vs a standard PC/G110/GG polisher?

Super pads, but the down side is that they don't last like a foam pad.

True, they seem a little more delicate than a foam pad, but foam pads have to take a beating from heavy pressure. Surbuf pads operate on very light pressure. I'll report back after doing an entire vehicle with Surbuf and let you know how the pads look after that.

If I can get 5-6 uses out of a Surbuf, that's only a dollar per use. I'd settle for that! (although I have some foam pads that I've used 30 times and they still look good!)

Very true Bill. Yes, let us know how the pads hold up. I have 2 pads, but only used it once on a trunk and it does cut, but perfer a wool pad and a rotary for heavy jobs.
