wax polish clay super spray over spray glossy spray...

hey guys, i know absolutely NOTHING about detailing a car. right now ive got a solid black car, and a solid white car.

can anyone direct me to a link or special DETAILING 4 DUMMIES page? (oh and it wont matter if it's a Zaino thing or Klasse or...) my choice keywords in the search are not helping any.

Something that can tell me exactly what i need, and even show me each step (water wash to clay to wax / polish to overspray to whatever), from daily driving dirty - to - car show clean?

thanks in advance, i hope to post my pix soon!

Hello STEEL I hope you find out what you want to know. The link Jngrbrdman provided is a great place to start - download it and give it a test drive. :)

1. Search "proper wash technique" or bucket wash

Be very careful how and what you use to wash you vehicle or else you will forever be polishing swirls and scratches.

2. Microfiber - Get yourself some JTinter, Paksak towel (10 is good starting number. When washing, don't use fabric softener.

3. Only use dishsoap occasionally (if at all) and only when you when you are getting ready to do a full detail and want a squeaky clean surface to start with (no oils, grime etc).

Use a good quality car soap (Meguiar Gold Class, Zaino, Eagle One Wet, Pinnacle etc.)

4. Use the least abrasive polish first and then work up the abrasive ladder.

Generally, the following products are considered top notch:

Meguiars Hand Polish (very very light)

Meguiars No. 9 v2.0 SMR (light) / Meguiars Swirl Free Polish

3M Finesse It II

3M Fine Cut Rubbing Compound

DACP by Meguiars - medium polish

Meguiars No. 3 medium cut compound

There's a few paint cleaners also available that fall in the middle of all those.

5. Clay - as a lubricant use car soap and water in squirt bottle. Stay away from the Meguiars version as it isn't very good.

6. Wax - S100/P21S is the flavour of the day. Meguiars No. 26 is standard. Blitz was popular but S100 has taken over that crown. Remember, waxes only last typically 4 weeks. Can't really be layered.

7. Poly. Sealants - Zaino and Klasse are standards here. Blackfire is starting to have a strong following these days.

Zaino / Klasse last upto 4 months or more. Generally, layer the product to about 3-4 layers has added effects, after that, the returns are diminished.

8. Carpet cleaner - Meguiars Detailer line with the APC+ diluted 4to1 seems to be very effective.

9. Vinyl - 303 is highly recommended.

10. Tires - 303 for matte, Eagle One Tire Gel is pretty good as well. Search the formula with "Tire product" should get plenty of hits

11. Leather - Clearcoated or not?? Check the forum by the "leather" search. There Renevo that's seems to be good. Zaino and Eagle and Meguiars all make a decent leather cleaner.

12. Quick Detailer - Final Inspection is not bad, Clearkote seem to have a good one, Clear Pearl isn't bad. Try a search for Quick Detailer and you'll find plenty.

13. Glass cleaning - search for it. Invisible glass seems to be a top performer. Use newspaper in the search and you'll see that use the cleaner and newpaper has added benefits.

14. Plastic - Plexus to maintain. To clean, Meguiars 2 step is good. Wetsanding can also be done relatively easy. A new tip has just emerged on leveling off the raised lettering seems interesting.

15. HAVE FUN :bounce

There's plenty more to learn and try out, but that's a start to the madness that is autopia!

Welcome to the forum. My best advice is to read and read and then read some more. Dont worry to much about specific products, most of the results come from technique and practice. Do not worry about perfection, just enjoy yourself.

hey webmasters and autopia gods...

have any of you thought about making a VIDEO book... after i read a little about the e-book - i thought it was a good idea to make it an EBOOK considering its over 200 pages. it would cost a lot.

what about a DVD video version of the e-book... mass quantities of DVD discs plus a good quality DV Camera will turn a profit at 20-30 dollars a DVD. (plus a good dvd author unless you guys have the programs and abilities for specual menus, etc.)

id buy it, (and yes i'd get the e-book too) it would be great because there would be NO mistakes made. the perfect technique used on the video would mean no mistakes when you try to duplicate it in real life.

Basically -- yes.

I just sold about $150 worth of crap on ebay. I already used all my $ on Zaino and EF stuff... in like 5 minutes.

I have around 2k invested into detailing. Many people have more than me.

While this is an interesting idea, it runs the risk of becoming gospel, and one thing you learn being at Autopia is that there is often no one best "right" method or technique for a lot of jobs. Lots of people have their differing styles and techniques that work for them. The vagueness of words allows for some interpretation and practical experience to come into the learning process, rather than simple copying and "detailing by rote". A lot of the cautions and tips that keep you safe can be simply listed just as easily as putting it on video, and most mistakes aren't fatal anyway. Part of the experience is just going at it and getting your feet wet. :)

My 2 cents.

(Besides, poor David's plenty busy already anyway - he runs the Autopia server by himself and wrote eBook himself. He IS Autopia! :D)

Yeah, pretty much. I thought I was "done" a few months ago, then I found functional gaps in the products I owned.

Then the experimentation gets you....

Snoogans!

Wow, I talked to you a few times on Brickboard I believe.

I actually have a picture of your car in my garage. I saw it on vvspy... maybe??? (Its the front nose shot with the horizontal grille) I have had sooo many people see it and tell me what an awesome car it is.

Why are you selling it, if you dont mind me asking?

Gorgeous car... glad to see another Volvo owner on the fourm! You are entering a great family. :xyxthumbs

thank you very much...

nothing against Volvo, thats for sure.. ive had nothing but great things to say about the S60 for 2 years now.

but it's time to move on, as much as i'd love to keep the Volvo I only need one car.

although its a (huge) drop in luxury, im going for the (huge) upgrade in sport / performance with the Subaru WRX sedan... or if things work out well enough an M3 would be nice :)

the wrx has a major aftermarket and autoX following.. im ready to dip into that. AWD is nice too!

the M3 would stay stock...engine-performance wise

Nice choice on wheels. :xyxthumbs Couldn't afford the Racing Harts myself, so I had to settle for some Katanas. They are my new favorite wheel.
