Sunglasses: What is everyone wearing?

Other than Transitions for my "beater glasses", I usually had one pair of *dark* RX sunglasses, RX inserts for my Gargoyles, plus clip-ons that came with my Matsuda frames. As soon as my near sight goes, I'm getting Lasik or whatever the surgery will be at that time. Perhaps there will be such a thing as UV filter implants at that time.
 
I have a selection of various sunglasses... RayBan, Maui Jim, LLBean and others... what I wear depends on my mood and where I am working. I am going to the firehouse or the academy, I also bring an inexpensive pair of polarized shades to wear if I am going to be part at a fire (as I deputy, I stay outside as the incident commander and run the show) or the Academy (in case I get involved in one of the training evolutions).



I also wear an inexpensive pair when I am outside washing vehicles, mowing the lawn, etc.
 
3 pairs Rayban ( 1 prescription), 1 pair Dior. Was close to getting a Quicksilver pair the other day, but I just couldn't find it in me to spend more when I have already 4 pairs.



If only I could apply the same to detailing stuff :).
 
I wouldn't spend over $20 on a pair of sunglasses if I won the freakin' lottery. Prices are insane and I usually lose them or sit on 'em and crush them.

If one spends more money on something, one tends to take better care of it. Think of how you'd treat a Porsche 911 Turbo if you had one vs. a Toyota Corolla.



Granted, sunglasses that cost $200 are certainly not 10x better than a $20 pair, but do have some very tangible benefits. I guess it could be compared to car wax, a few people will see a $95 jar of Souveran absolutely worth the cost, while most will be perfectly content with an OTC product or something like Collinite.

I would've thought that would be the case but I'm continued to be amazed by some of the examples in real life I've seen. From people with formally beautiful homes and properties when they bought it go to absolute (crap), to folks who own $75K+ cars who let them get banged up beyond detailing and reconditioning, sometimes I'm just really floored by what I see. Just different trains of thought/different strokes for different folks. :think: :confused:
 
There's definitely a healthy mark up when it comes to items like sunglasses, and certainly eyeglasses and stuff like jewelry and watches.I'm not sure if the different degrees of quality of materials that certain brands at certain price points necessarily warrant their MSRP all of the time. This is where "what the market will bear" comes in, and status-fashion-and other other emotion-oriented marketing comes in to make the final sway to get the consumer to make the purchase. Nothing wrong with that, it's just the nature of that category of product.
 
My Gargoyles were among my first pricey shades, but twenty-some years later they're still protecting my eyes, and they've protected them from some things I absolutely will *NOT* take chances with. My Tag Heuers were rather pricey too, but they're the most comfortable sunglasses I've ever worn and I don't suffer the same eyestrain that I've experienced with some others. And there are moments when that can be a very serious matter indeed.



[shrug]...If you don't need or appreciate the diff then don't pay for it. This is starting to sound like another of those "why buy a [something expensive]?" threads :nervous:
 
Sometimes I have mixed feeling about getting those shades with such higher quality polarized lenses. Reason being is when I look at my Honda, I can see those little circles in the composition of the material in all of the glass, really, really well. The windows look bizarre actually, but the shades do afford me to see any mystery smearing and haze that drive me nuts while driving so I can see it and wipe it away all the way the first time.



Audi glass has the same type of circles, but it's super prominent on the Honda. Sure glad it's not something visible from inside the car looking out. That could be a safety hazard. I have a few other , high quality pairs from good quality discount stores that aren't polarized.

Yeah, the TAG Heuers I have were specifically made without the polarizing, as their "driver's series" shades.

I've noticed this too. I wore my polarized 0649's while working on a new Bimmer 650i yesterday out in full sun (I wouldn't normally wear those shades when working on a car...), and all of the glass had this peculiar "leopard-print" look to it. I noticed it on the clear bra on my dad's RX350, too.



I also am having a tough time with the gradient lenses on my Carreras, especially in full sun (might have something to do with the fact that they aren't all that dark, either). They are my shades of choice for those bright cloudy days, though, and the brown tint makes everything look a bit more "rosy".

I've got this same issue in our cars. It wasn't too bad in my wife's Audi, but in my new car it's really bad. I can barely make out the readouts in the dash. I think it's partially due to a lower resolution.



I'm going to try the Serenegti Drivers...they seem to be well-liked and have a great lens.

Or the limited viewing angle of LEDs...or something like that (the exact science of the thing eludes me).

My first-generation Drivers are actually lousy driving glasses as they don't darken when there's auto glass between them and the light source! I'm sure they've sorted that out by now, but I'd check on it. And mine don't get all that dark either, usually dark enough, but not always. That's why there're merely my spare pair.
 
I randomly notice that leopard print with my sunglasses too. One of the strangest things I've seen is some random windshields on Benz's or BMW's will look blue or magenta colored with polarized lenses. One thing I love to do though is wear them at night because I have 6000k HID headlights and foglights so all the lane markers light up bright bluish-white, and it's like I'm in Tron or something.

I had the Serengetis long ago. Can't remember what happened to them...probably breakage.



I'll let you know how the newer generation is. I purchased a glass lens, "drivers gradient" style.



I have a fairly new set of MJ's, which I like a lot. It's just the polarization, aging eyes and the lowered resolution of the dashboard display that's disconcerting.
