i was just wondering, does anyone actually know what the differnece is between the SMR for light colored cars and the SMR for dark colored cars? is it chemically different?

thing is i hear people use smr for dark colors on a light colored car and still get good results. i used my SMR for light colored cars on a black car and also saw results. so whats the real difference between these two products?

Basically so if you have some stone chips you don't fill them in with a white product on a black car and a black product on a white car. Most of us would remove all the residue anyhow........

DK- do the oils it puts back into the paint have something to do with it? Like special oils for darks cars, and visa versa for light cars?

I had read somewhere, maybe at the 3M site or here that it was for reasons similar to what DK stated, the MSDS for both contain the same info

Don't believe any hype about "feeder" oils for replenishing paint. Paint is cured and sealed and does not need any oils. In the SMR's case, the oils are used for lubrication to carry the abrasives. There is no difference in the light and dark versions of SMR. These oils should be removed when finished prior to applying a sealant. DAWN works great for this.

What about SMR's filling properties. Properautocare.com describes it as "A fine glaze with additional filling solids that quickly removes and fills light surface imperfections, swirl marks and light oxidation". If this statement is true, wouldn't some of the swirls come back after using Dawn? The 3M site calls the product a "glaze" as well.

Since most of use are going to use a polymer type of product after prepping, the SMR oils would have to be completely removed. Dk, did you notice any reappearing of marring when removing the SMR oils with Dawn?

in SMR seem to have a thinner consistancy than the ones in lets say....IHG.

I guess they do provide some filling, but in my opinion, one should be using SMR product for its abrasives, not it's oils. I didn't notice much difference in the look of the paint after the oils were removed, but I do recommending dawn washing before evaluating results. Good point Intermezzo 330i!!

DK is correct. SMR is a light abrasive. Then would imply that it should remove the swirls not just cover them up for a short period such as Imperial Hand Glaze. Laters.

Wow, you guys are cooking tonight. Good exchanges and advice.

Yes, the idea is we handle problems, we don't cover them up. Plus, how could you lay down a sealant on top of a glaze? You could, but it would seem counter-productive.

I am waiting for my SMR and FI-2 to get here... I am going to use it after I clay my car and then I'm going to AIO and SG. I'll take pictures and post them if the lighting is good, so I can catch the swirl marks (not too bad, but they are there).

I had the chance to detail a black C6 Z06 this weekend it had 10,000 miles on it. The whole car was filled with swirls and a few RIDS here and there.
