Subaru owners, tell me all about them

My GF just bought an 08 5 door Impreza Premium. It is a GREAT car. A huge improvement over previous years as far as interior fit and finish goes. It is VERY quiet on the highway, handles well, gets 30MPG plus or minus, and most importantly it's fun to drive. We have been road tripping a lot this summer and have 18k miles on it already! No rattles, weird noises, or any other issues so far. We have also been very happy with the utility that the hatchback provides. I just finished (about an hour ago) driving from Colorado to California with my sister and GF. We had plenty of room and believe me, they didn't pack light! I guess what I'm getting at is that we couldn't be happier with our purchase.

I have a 2004 Outback wagon and have not had any problems. And they are great in the northeast pa winters. When I purchase mine, it came w/ heated seats, heated side mirrors, and it also has a element in the windshield to keep ice from building up on the wipers.

On a side note, I do have a Subaru credit card, and I get 3% rebate in the form of Subaru Bucks that can be used at the dealer for parts and services.

My wife and I love our 2005 Legacy Wagon.

FYI - The ONLY engines that require Premium (91 Octane) are the Turbo engines and the 3.0R 6cycl. The Tribeca comes with the newer 3.6 6cycl engine which uses regular.

My fiancee and I have a 2008 Outback (Limited - great package adds everything you need in one package / leather sunroof heated seats mirrors windshield)

I love the paint - Deep Bronze Metallic - easy to work with - good flake pop - and it seems to get lighter in light and darker in dusk.

We checked out the 2.5XT, but it requires premium fuel and it just didn't have enough excitement (over the base engine) to justify the cost. The base engine IS peppy and ours has a Sportshift gate in case you want to have better control over the RPMs. I did at one point offer to my fiancee to check out the new Impreza as it's a total package as well...albeit smaller and less expensive!

We are MORE than pleased with the quality of this car. The only changes I would make is more storage space (cubby holes and larger bins) and add a hybrid engine.

that's it, it really is a total package.

SPECS:

2008 Subaru Outback Wagon 2.5i Limited w/VDC (stability control) (Automatic Transmission)

Deep Bronze Metallic

The Limited package includes: 6 disc CD changer / heated seats / leather seats / moonroof

Other cool features: dual climate control / MP3 hookup / satellite radio ready / heated mirrors and wiper blades / fog lights

36 month lease / 15k miles a year / 0 down / $319.11 per month.

MSRP - $28540

Selling Price - $24449

The dealer didn't touch it, we sent it to rickrack for detailing and the addition of a 3M clear bra and had the windows tinted to 35% (max for Mass.)

Everybody who has one seems to like it, except for me and my wife. Our two Subies ('96 Outback and '02 WRX) were less than swell, both with regard to reliablity and bad-weather performance (the latter in direct comparison to our Audi Quattros- literally side-by-side with the exact same tires).

But that's just me and my wife and everybody else seems to love 'em :nixweiss I mighta liked ours better had they not been in the shop all the time... warranty or not it was a hassle (the warranty isn't worth much if they can't figure out how to fix it ;) ).

Just in case you get one like ours, I'd make sure your local Subie dealer is good, and has experience with manual shift ones.

The paint is pretty thin, but it's not all that bad. Better than that on some Mazdas, for instance.

Having never owned one, I've heard they aren't made like they used to be. :nixweiss A relative of mine had a late 90s (I think) Impreza wagon, but got rid of it soon after it was purchased due to several issues, IIRC.

I was reading up on the Impreza on MSN autos and it appears they had "significant" engine issues from '97-2003.

Awesome car if you like paying 35k for an interior that a Hyundai can laugh at. But, people don't buy these cars for the interiors. Personally, since I spend 99% of my time driving inside my car (and I say 99% to account for "ghost riding the whip" every now and then), I want to feel like I got what I paid for. Sure, everyone else looking at the car feels like I got what I paid for (b/c it really does look badass on the exterior) but it doesn't feel like it on the inside.

YMMV.

ha that made me laugh, and i agree with you.

when i sat in the STI at the san diego car show, it didnt feel like i was sitting in a 35-40k dollar car... the same goes for alot of the domestics i sat in as well. the cars interior didnt make it feel like you sat in a car worth however much you paid...

Which is why I'm going for the new A4's. Not only do you get the performance with the 2.0t Quattro (I know, it doesn't exactly hold a candle to the WRX performance), but you also get a friggin awesome interior, IMO, as compared to any other car for the price.

Also, I hope someone doesn't bring up BMW interiors being "luxurious" (i.e. a new M3 or something). Not only are they insanely plain for 50k, but the added touch of baby puke orange lighting is great!

I believe the original poster is talking about an 08 2.5i Impreza (non-turbo). The engine issues for the 97-03 no longer exist. the post 04 models are a different breed with better chassis and engines. With the addition of VDC as an option (get the VDC by the way especially if you buy the stick) through out the line up the AWD performance in snow has probably improved. With the under 20k price of the Subaru 2.5i with VDC (regular fuel) buying a premium fuel using 25k+ Audi is a more expensive option, nice interior and all ;) Just saying :)

What problems did you have in particular with the 02 WRX? Was it manual? My best friend just picked one up last Decemember that had 100k miles on it. It's got about 106k on it now. It seems like a decent car, a nice AWD, turbo 4; but something about it doesn't 'stick' with me. The clutch was like working a leg machine when I drove it, and I didn't feel anywhere near connected to the car compared to my little acura rsx, but that was just me.

I'm not to fond of the 'flat' engine, seems like working on it isn't too easy. We ended up needing to pull the IC off and the various ducting just to change the PCV valve, but then again my car can be a little 'tight' too.

So right.

I feel there is definitely a 'diminishing returns' factor with Subaru trim levels and LOTS of other manufacturers.

Stick near the base trim levels and Subaru increases its value.
