STP Son of a Gun

I use the good stuff (Vinylex or 303) on the interior, but is there any reason I shouldn't be using STP Son of a Gun on the tires? It leaves a very pleasing low-sheen finish on the tires. Not the least bit glossy. If the cheap stuff, such as STP, can have detrimental effects on rubber over the long-term, will it really matter? I mean, the tires will probably last 2 years max. Just curious, as it seems like a waste of money to use the expensive protectants on the tires.

Thanks,

Mike

if used for a long duration tire dressing just as a wax builds up in layers - preventing enviormental effects - they will remain (thats the tyre walls) as good as new - as far as expense goes its an individual choice to whether u want them to stand out - but remember good looking tyre walls increase the apperance of you alloys - they really do finish the cars apperance.

are known to contain dimeyl silicone oils....the greasy consitancy you see used for shine. This is actually a rubber deteriorant, and many of us do not use these products on our tires. Some tire manufactures will not warranty side wall failure if dressings like these are used. They work well till you stop using the product...look how dry and brown your tires look?

Use a quality PDMS dressing like turtle wax tire gel, 303, lexol, or Zaino Z16....

I used to be a firm believer in Armor All, STP etc in my early teen years. I would pour that stuff on the tires until you could push on them and see stuff come out. I always wondered why my tires looked like crap after the first rain. Brown, grungy... IMO I would stay away from those type of products and stick with better ones..

Stoner, McGuiars Endurance, Eagle One etc....:up

Actually, I have found that if you clean the tire now and then with a general purpose cleaner, it pretty much eradicates any buildup and my tires never were brown at all. I should note that my car is only a week old, and I have not even dressed the tires yet. I used the STP on my Jeep Grand Cherokee that I turned in on a lease. I am going to be a lot more fanatical with the Passat.

I'm not being naive here. I do understand that these inexpensive products have their problems. However, I would guess that it would take many, many years for this type of product to actually deteriorate the sidewall - like maybe 10+ years. The tire will be gone in 2.5 years in all likelihood.

Anyway, the STP doesn't seem to be greasy like armor all. I wonder if it does contain the silicon oils.

I guess I'll err to the side of caution and go with something like Meguiars Endurance or a similar product.

Thanks, Mike.

I thought many had gotten browning from Endurance as well? YoSteve.com posted a thread about it some time ago . . . the problem occurs after you stop using the product for a while and it wears off. I tested a tiny bit on one part of a tire and it browned somewhat so I haven't touched the stuff since.

The choice is yours of course but DK said some valid points.

Eagle one makes a PDMS type protectant (Forget name) but search a post for it IT is exterior vinyl rubber protectant I think and is less expensive then 303.

There are others out there you just have to search for them. I also find they tend to last longer with the shine an attract less gook.
