Stongard vs. X-pel

Heya guys...haven't been here in a while!



Anyway, I have a new '02 VW GTI that I'll be ordering a clear bra for in the next couple days. Just wondering if any of you guys have experience with both StonGard AND X-Pel. Are StonGard's claims about having better coverage around corners true? If so, I think it's worth the extra expense over X-pel.



Also, two more quick question: any idea about what I should expect to pay for installation? I'm not about to do this myself...



Finally, why not just put it over the entire car? Just curious...seems like a good idea to me...get it all shined up at the factory and then apply it over everything. No more rock chips, no more need for a clearcoat, no acid rain etchings, etc. etc. etc. and no noticeable lines on the hood where the clear bra stops. :D I'd be all over it!

I don’t have it but have seen several cars with it. You can see it and it would look wacky on your entire car. But I think it looks better on the front than a bunch of stone chips do.

No, actually I've just got a "regular old" GTI! I heavily debated the 337, but the MSRP was rumored to be higher, it wasn't supposed to come with the monsoon sound system, wouldn't be here until may/june, etc. etc. etc. I'm also not big on the aluminum interior, red accents everywhere, and the roads around here are not too conducive to 18" wheels. I *love* the "go" stuff, though, and would still really like to have one. Oh well...



Anyway, so anybody got opinions on StonGard vs. X-Pel before I go and spend the extra $50 or so on a StonGard kit tomorrow?



I had an X-Pel kit on the headlights of my last car (VW Passat) and had good experiences (but like StonGard claims, it didn't fully coverthe headlights), and the car also had some of the protective film in front of the rear wheel wells from the factory. I still think that if you were to put the stuff all over the entire car, you wouldn't really be able to tell...the car would just look really really shiney. No more swirl marks, either. And if something did happen, you could just have the protective film reapplied and your paint would probably still be perfect. I dunno...mebbe it would look funky?

Oh woops I misread your post thought you were getting one soon and didn’t have it already. Anyways I love GTI’s & congrats on the new ride. I’m hopefully getting a new car soon and it’s one of the models I’m considering. Just wanted to clear that up and give ya a bump cuz I know there’s some stonegard/xpel autopians out there… :)

:up I've had the full Stongard kit on my car for 5 months now and have no regrets. I'm using Klasse/Souveran and when people comment on the finish, I've never had a person notice or say "hey, that's Stongard on the paint". Only extra step you need to do when buffing is to make sure you get the all wax out of the seams. Once you do that, the film pretty much disappears from view.
 
I'm having the full StonGard kit professionally installed this weekend! I'm paying out the nose for it (around $600 including the material), but it'll be worth it.
