Starting to hate black

Now that you've learned how to fix it, do you still hate black? (or greenish black)

Well I've always thought it looked beautiful. But I don't look forward to the long hours of swirl removal. And I still think the lighter colored LS400s look better than all the darker ones with the exception of well-detailed blacks. So I guess I'll have to make sure my green-black is well-detailed.

It does drive home to me that the bickering over Zaino vs Carnauba or Souveran vs. S100 or 16 vs Zymol is all trivial noise in comparison to the prep. If the swirls were gone, then polishing and waxing would take no real time and effort.

But given my schedule, this may take eons. And remember, non Autopians tend to say that if they can't see the swirls till they come up close, it's no big deal.

But then there are all the people who've been corrupted by reading this forum...:D

4 cars ALL BLACK don't buy a black car if you cant't hack it.Black is a lot of work but the results makes it worth while.I can't tell you how many people stop me or say somthing like is that car new and ita 4 years old

Oh, I can hack it, I just don't have enough time after detailing other people's cars all day. To keep black perfect, you have to dust it nearly hourly!

I also kept thinking -- there must be a slightly quicker way to do this. Do you really need 3-4 passes with 3MPI-III? Maybe a Megs Red cutting pad? (You know, the one Megs says NOT to use with a PC.) What do you think?

Say it with me....CYCLO! :xyxthumbs

I used to swear I'd never own anything but black cars, had a lot of 'em. But now that I have mostly silver vehicles it's a lot easier to have a life. Inspecting them for minor marring is a pain, but you *can* get by with the minor stuff if you want to on a "driver" and that makes all the difference.

ScottWax- Heh heh, do I detect a marked appreciation for the Cyclo? :D

Yeah, it really can be a huge time saver over the PC ;)

jvcn- Interesting about the #2 and your experiences with the 1Z UP. My experiences differ, but :nixweiss different situations are, well, different.

I'm just glad you're getting a handle on things. Yeah, working by PC can take forever....I would definitely use a cutting pad with the PI-III RC, I do it all the time. First 05933/cutting, then 05933/polishing, then something like PI-III MG/polishing. Four passes, heh heh, I've done a *lot* more than that with just the cutting pad and my first (of many) polishes.

Pondscum- As long as you're using a PC/Cyclo, stuff like 1z Ultra is still pretty safe compared to by-hand. Even with a rotary, it's not as bad as some would have you believe (Ultra is used at low speeds with a rotary, that helps keep it safe). Gotta watch places where the paint might be thin (high spots, etc.) but in my experience cut-through/excessive thinning is pretty rare unless you're using a rotary or dealing with an unusual situation.

On a black Lexus, I have found the paint very easy to work with. I will be posting a black GS soon where I used SSR2.5 to get out some swirls. I just received my SFX polishing kit and will be trying that soon on the deeper scratches.

I almost wish I had a genuine black onyx car (instead of ebony pearl). The SS paint would be soft but easier to fix than clearcoated greenish black.

But while I was obssessing about my 9 year old paint, my wife backed our 2005 minivan into another car and dented the hatch door (At least the other car had no damage for me to pay for). Now the paint is broken and there's a dent the size of a baby football near the edge of the rear door

Ahh....the joys and tribulations of owning a black car!

I've owned two black cars, and I loved them both when they were clean, which, like others have mentioned, could be as little as a few hours!

Every tiny imperfection shows. But that is also what makes Black so darn beautiful!

Good luck and hope you get as close to your goal as possible.
